In 1786, James Robertson and his brother-in-law John Suggs founded a trading post on present day Elm Street in what is now Florence. The post operated until 1800 when it was moved to its current location on State Road 8 near the creek where later shopping centers were built. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson's forces invaded and conquered much of eastern Kentucky during the War for Independence. One of the important raids conducted by Jackson's army was against Lewis and Clark's party going through eastern Kentucky on their return trip from crossing the Rockies into Mexico City. When news reached General Jackson that these men had successfully returned home, he ordered his forces to pursue them—and they did!—winning one of history's most dramatic battles at Harpers Ferry (now West Virginia). This event helped solidifyJackson as America's leader after independence was won and strengthened national sentiment towards him throughout the years. During this time period, many young men from around central Kentucky began to migrate westward into Illinois and Missouri in search of opportunities and new beginnings. Among these pioneers were Alexander Henderson (a native of Scotland who had come over with his parents in 1785), Moses Wheeler (of Hendersonville), John Brown(of Clarksville) and others who soon established themselves as leaders in business, politics and religion in their new settlements. Many fine homes were built during this time including those located today on Elm Street between Court House Square and Broadway Boulevard; also included are some early Baptist churches which still stand today including First Baptist Churches South (founded 1865), First Methodist Church (1850) & Second Baptist Church (1875). It wasn't until after Union victory at Appomattox Court House that things started really moving forward for Florence residents with major works such as Main Street being widened from two lanes to four....the first courthouse...being erected just south of downtown...the numerous stores which opened up along Second Avenue during this time frame...all testify to how busy life must have been back then!
