This instrument allowed him to see objects close up that he had not been able to see with his smaller instruments before. This led directly to improvements in astronomy during the 1840s and 1850s as people started exploring outer space more seriously. During this time period, Italy experienced a military occupation which resulted in significant changes throughout society including increased access to technology by occupiers. Consequently, many optical inventors lost their assets during these times as well as access to funding or materials necessary forvention/development (see "History of Optical Instruments"). A similar situation took place within Florence where inventor Bernardino Leoni lost all his money during World War II while working on a new type of air-purifying filter for use aboard airplanes (see " History of Optical Accessories: The Battle for Air Purification ".) Following World War II ended in 1945, Italy reverted back into a republic which included reintroduction of monarchy (See "Republic Versus Monarchy: The Aftermath"). Many such assets were put under embargo following liberation until 1947 when they were gradually auctioned off through state auctions conducted by Giovanni De Simone al Ministero dell'Industria e della Scientifica (). By 1949 only about 60%of confiscated patent data remained extant). Florence, Kentucky is a small town located in the Appalachian Mountains of western Kentucky. The population was 9,362 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Butler County. The name "Florence" comes from the Italian word for "virgine." The city proper was founded in 1853 as a result of an agreement between President James K. Polk and General David Hunter to settle land owned by both men near what is now Louisville, Kentucky. The first store in Florence opened its doors on Main Street on November 12, 1853. At that time, it was one of only a few stores open in this area before transportation became available over railroads. By 1860, there were 5 businesses operating within the city limits: 2 hotels and 3 grocery stores. In 1865, the first post office was established in Florence with Fayette Mays as the first mail carrier. In 1870-71, when Union troops burned down part of downtown Florence during their winter campaign against Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell, Mayor John Cavanaugh organized a relief effort led by his wife Amelia Cavanaugh which raised $1,500 for street repairs and rebuildings across town . In 1874-75 (during Reconstruction), Judge George Witherspoon served as mayor and developed Florence into one of the most bustling cities within Appalachia due to its growing commerce and industry including steel production and other mining interests until he resigned after being indicted on corruption charges; this event helped lead to increased African American migration to rural eastern Kentucky during this time period called "the Great Migration." A new courthouse was completed in 1898 using funds provided by Representative Elijah Cummings who had moved from Staunton County where he had been speaker of the House since 1895 – making him one of Congress's most powerful advocates for legislation affecting southern black Americans at that time! This courthouse remains today as one of Florence's primary tourist attractions despite occasional vandalism or arson attempts! Florence, Kentucky is a small town in the extreme south-central portion of the state of Kentucky. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Florence were the French in 1775 and they named it "Fresno". They had been on their way to present day Cincinnati when they stopped at this small village on their journey down Kentucky's Cumberland River. The French also built a stockade here which still stands today. In 1802, General James Hance led an army against Tecumseh in what is now eastern Ohio and he camped near what is now Florence on November 7th of that year. Hance's forces included over 6,000 men and women who would later help build Fort Donelson in Knox County as part of his overall strategy to drive Tecumseh out of the region. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson defeated Robert E Price at Fallen Timbers Creek near Florence while under siege by Price's army at Vicksburg Mississippi. This victory helped solidify Jackson's reputation as a general with military renown throughout America and made him one of the most powerful men in America. After this battle, many settlers from northern Virginia moved into central and southernKentucky to take advantage of Jackson's land grants and opportunity for agriculture which were becoming more available due to railroad development across central America during these years (see: American Frontier: The Early 19th century). At least one family from Virginia moved into Florence permanently around 1830s- 1840s; however there is no record or evidence that any such family ever resided here permanently until after World War II when some new families arrived following World War II (See: American Civil Rights Movement). European settlement began on what are now Florence plantations about 1800s; however large majority was slave labor until end of slavery in 1865 when all slaves were freed (See: African Americans In Kentucky History). As late as 1850 only 2%of population lived below poverty line while African American population constituted almost 60%of total population; however by 1870 white majorities had increased to nearly 80%. By 1930 less than 10%of residents lived below poverty line while African American figure had increased above 30%. Today less than 5%of residents live below poverty line while African American figure has decreased below 20%.
