Florence was founded in 1827 and named for Florence, Italy. The city of Florence began as a small post office called "Kenton" on the Ohio River opposite what is now Louisville. In 1827, General John Crayton ordered General James Hays to take Pekin (now Cincinnati) and march it downriver so that its inhabitants could be relocated to central Kentucky where they would form an Indian reservation. When Hays arrived at Kenton he found only three people living there: his superior officer Major John Doolittle, and two Indians who had accompanied him on the journey In 1828-29, when General James Hays's troops were marching through Pike County on their way from Louisville to start another campaign against Native Americans, they passed through Keton and discovered that all but one of the residents had moved away. So Hays ordered Doolittle to start building a new post office at present day Florence which became operational on April 12th 1830 under the name "Kenton". Doolittle's original store still stands today within city limits next to the old courthouse complex which was built in 1865 by Drury & Company using classical Revival architecture style with brick vaults and Tiffany glass windows.. The current courthouse complex also includes Mayor McConnell's home which was built in 1897 by Judge Whitehead and contains several Greek Revival features including a Ionic Column topped by an equilateral triangle dentil roofing system.. In addition to her home mayor McConnell also owns part of Florences Public Library which opened its doors in 1951
