Florence is a town in Marshall County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. The first Europeans to visit Florence were French traders in 1609. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Florence was established by Nathaniel Banks in 1777. In 1811, a land grant was made to John Covington for his farm on the Ohio River near present day Louisville. In 1816, General James K. Polk nominated Judge David Aiken as United States Attorney General because he considered him to be "the most eminent lawyer and jurist of his time." Aiken served from 1816 until his death in 1829; during this time he prosecuted cases including cases against Andrew Jackson and Henry Clay for violating the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which limited slavery within the United States but allowed it on certain slave states free if they admitted Kansas into that state as well. On December 15, 1830, voters ratified an ordinance setting off a fire that destroyed much of downtown Florence and left over 100 people dead (the largest city fire in American history). The disaster helped spur development around downtown Florence and led to increased business activity throughout the community which has continued until today.
