Florence is a historic town that was founded in 1854 by James Moseley and his wife Anna Ladd. The community became a city in 1907 and was renamed Florence after the Italian city of Florence. The establishment of reliable transportation allowed for large-scale development in Florence during the late 19th century, as farmers began to settle here to farm land that had been purchased from Cherokee Indians or captured during the American Indian Wars. By 1890, there were over 100 businesses in Florence - including six banks - and it boasted a population of over 1,000 people. In 1907, when Louisville became the capital of Kentucky, Florence became an important industrial center with heavy production by breweries and other manufacturing companies. However, by 1920 most factories had closed down due to economic stagnation and World War II brought significant challenges to Florentine industries such as automobiles and munitions plants. Today, much of what once constituted downtown Florence has been developed into high-density housing developments; however some aspects of history remain strong such as preservation work on the old brick buildings which are now used for apartments or commercial uses. As one resident put it: "It's hard not to feel like part of something larger than myself when living here – whether it's going out for coffee or picking up trash." One example which underscores how tightropewalking between pastimes can be for local residents is Prohibitionism in Florence – while many storefronts still sell GAS oiled cigarettes this practice changed abruptly after prohibition ended on January 15th 1933 thanks to new federal regulations passed by Franklin D Roosevelt (see also below). A few years later grocery stores reopened selling beer but all alcohol sales were abandoned until 1966 wheningo opened up shop next door - marking yet another twist in post- prohibition history!

Many famous athletes from around the world came to visit Florence during those years, including Jesse Owens and Otto Kappeber. In 1916, Florence became part of the United States after it was annexed by the country as part of the Oklahoma Territory. The city continued to grow until it reached its current size in 1940 when World War II begannbsp;Florence became an important military base due to its location at Camp Butler some twenty miles away from Lexington-the capital of Kentucky-and its population grew rapidly enough that two separate municipal governments were created: one for civilians (called Florentine City) and one for soldiers (called Fort Knox City). During World War II, Florence served as an airfield for planes flying over England; it also played a role inWWIIin destroying thousands of Axis vehicles that had been hidden on farms throughout central Kentucky. After war ended, Florence slowly lost its importance as a military base but continued to be a popular tourist destination due to its architecture and beauty. In 1998, Fort Knox City merged with Florentine City so that both towns could have one government combined under one roof.; however, this merger failed because both cities wanted their own police department which would have put them out OFFLINE!. As resultof this failure, Fort Knox City remains an independent city today while Florentine City is still controlled by Mayor Joe Capps; he has been in office since 2003!
