In 1892, the Florence Arsenal, then located in the city of Florence, Kentucky) was opened to produce arms for the United States. The Arsenal produced weapons such as rifles and shotguns. In 1904, a new armory was built in Florence and became known as "the Armory." The Armory produced handguns including revolvers and pistols. In 1916, the Armory moved to its present location in downtown Florence. The current facility is home to four floors of shooting galleries with over 2,000 firearms on display. The airbase closed in 1991 and was sold to a private developer who converted it into luxury housing. In 1984, Florence became home to one of America's first electronic voting machines - Model VE-4D used by both local and national political campaigns - which helped make election day more democratic than ever before. Today, Florence is also known for its annual city fair - one of the largest in Kentucky - which attracts over 100 thousand people each year!
