In 1907, Mayor George Wickersham dedicated a new courthouse located on Main Street to serve as both a legal center and court house for Florentine residents. During World War II, Florence played an important role in providing food and materials needed by soldiers stationed abroad. Many houses were used as warehouses and war supplies were delivered through streets that still remain today named after some of those responsible for this crucial work: Second Avenue (now renamed Jefferson Boulevard), Third Avenue (now Rte 276), Fourth Avenue (now Nolensville Road), Fifth Avenue (now Elmira Road)
