The town was founded in 1795 by the brothers James and John Robertson, and early settlers used rifles to protect their crops and homes. The first guns were made of hickory wood, and many residents still own these antique firearms today. Firearms played an important role in the town’s history, most notably during the Civil War. Rifleman from all over the region fought in the war, including members of the Robertson family. In 1865, after Confederate troops sacked Florence, Kentucky, local residents formed a militia to help defend their town. This action helped ensure that Florence would not be taken by Confederate forces again and preserved its independence for over 70 years.

In 1871, a group of businessmen in Florence organized the first national rifle Association meeting. They produced a shirt with the words "I am an American Rifleman" to promote their organization. The association continued to meet until 1903. In 1907, the Florence decided to join the University of Kentucky as its third campus. This event led to increased demand for clothing items in Florence and elsewhere in the area. A store was opened on Main Street in 1911 by Bessie Ewing and her husband John Wessels. They sell shirts, hats, and other clothing items from 9am to 5pm Monday through Saturday. The store has been open continuously since then with only minor changes (such as adding an extra floor in 2013). In 1951, the shop moved onto present day First Street near Central Avenue when it opened its doors again after being closed for several years due to fire damage. It is still open today and regularly sells firearms t-shirts!
Florence, Kentucky is a small town located in the mountainous region of north-central Kentucky. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hardin County. The name comes from Frenchman Major Pierre Laclède’s 1785 survey of the area, which named it for Princess Marie-Antoinette of France. The first European to visit Florence was Captain James Cook in 1792. He naming three local rivers - Big Sandy, Little Sandy and French Broad - after members of his crew: James Cook (Bagnall), George Vancouver (Walsh) and Philip Carteret (Corry). In 1802, General Andrew Jackson took command of Fort Donelson on the Cumberland River and moved his army westward to support General Jean Baptiste Bourdon de Lamarque's siege of Mobile Bay. On July 12, 1803, while encamped near present day Florence on Dry Fork Creek, Bourdon de Lamarque's forces discovered an American force under Colonel John Floyd waiting for them south of Baton Rouge River. ConfederateGeneral Robert Elemant led a raid against Floyd's force that resulted in about 100 Ulysses S Grant soldiers being killed or captured including future President Ulysses S Grant In 1824 Jasper Fenton platted what is now Florence Township on land he had acquired from David Todd during Indian Wars fought between Shawnee Indians and Scottish colonists over fur trading rights in what is now Hardin County Fenton also donated a parcel to Hardin County for courthouse use John Hanks founded Hanks Drug Store & Mercery in downtown Florence around 1886 The Post Office built its first building at Front Street and Fifth Avenue in 1889 Fenton also donated land north of Main Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue where Poultry House stands today as one block east along main street
