Florence, Kentucky is a small town in the Eastern Kentucky county seat of Frankfort. The population was 3,972 at the 2010 census. The community is located on the banks of the River Thames and along the route of the old Louisville & Nashville Railroad. It was named for Florence, Italy in 1827 by General John Hargrave who founded what is now Frankfort as a military post on land that he had partitioned from Lexington. The first white settlers in what is now Florence were James Brown and his family in 1792. They arrived with four other families from Virginia under the leadership of Captain John Forbes. James Brown's son, Colston, helped to establish trade with Indian traders and built a mill which became one of largest mills in eastern Kentucky. In 1827, General John Hargrave established what is now Frankfort as a military post on land that he had partitioned from Lexington after successfully repelling an invading force led by Andrew Jackson. On July 6, 1827, General Hargrave named Florence after his wife Frenchy (née McLemore) who was then living in Italy with their two children: Louisa and John Hargrave Jr.. Captain William Fenton purchased much of what is now downtownFrankfort from Colonel Brown shortly before its incorporation into city limits as part of a deal done to avoid future boundary disputes between Francey's home country andKYC over property titles associated with Fort Donelson (now Louisville). This purchase also included most of present day Elmwood Cemetery; both properties are still held by KFCwrapper Inc., which redevelops them into commercial office buildings today. Florence experienced rapid growth during hard times brought about by Reconstruction following President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1865-66 when many slaveholders decided to rejoin society rather than fight for another chance at freedom under Confederate rule. By 1870-71 Florence had more than 1,000 residents and boasted several stores including Jno Hopkinsons Grocery Store (later Piggly Wiggly), Masonic Hall No 2 (later Cooper Union), Mrs Mayes' Bakery/Dinner House (later Belmont Inn), Dr Gooldt's Pharmacy/Medical School Building No 1 (now First United Methodist Church), A&W Root beer Bottling Company - later Anheuser Busch Brewery - Antioch Baptist Church - First Presbyterian Episcopal Church - Masons Lodge #2 (later Masonic Temple No 4) The population continued to grow rapidly through out Reconstruction until 1880 when it peaked at 3,500 due largely to increasing demand for labor across all sectors of economy as American factories reopened following World War I. However growth began to slow down around 1920 due mainly to federal prohibition laws which made alcohol production illegal throughout most of America outsideof some coastal states such as Connecticut where prohibition prevailed until 1933. Despite this setback industrial development resumed around 1930-1935 thanks largely to advances made in transportation technology combined with new investment opportunities opened up due primarily to world depression coupled with increased immigration bringing greatly needed workers into American cities centers such as Florence KY during this time period

The first post office in Florence was established on July 6, 1871. The present post office building was built in 1924 and is one of the oldest buildings in Florence. In 1881, J.D. McConnell founded McConnell's Livery and Sales Company which still operates as a livery and carriage service today. In 1927, McConnells opened a grocery store named "McConnell's General Store". In 1930, the store moved to its present location next to the old high school campus on Main Street. During World War II, Florence became an important manufacturing center for munitions production due to its proximity to plants operated by Sockman Chemical Corporation and other companies producing explosives and other munitions products.
