Bullets in Florence, Kentucky date back to the Civil War. The town was founded on the site of a small fortification erected by General J.B. Stuart during the war. The fortifications were destroyed by Union forces in 1865 and never rebuilt, but bullets from those batteries still remain in use today in Florence. The first bullet was fired in Florence on November 16, 1861, when Confederate troopsfired at an Union military detachment while they were moving into town for an attack on a Union post two days earlier. This initial volley killed one soldier and wounded five others before being repulsed with fire from nearby Fort Donelson. In 1864, Confederate General Jubal Early arrived in town to lead his army against the Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant. On July 10th of that year, Early's force attacked a Union camp near what is now downtown Florence and began firing upon the soldiers and civilians within range using riflebutts and pistols as projectiles. Three people died as a result of this gunfire; One was Private John Hargrave who had been shot multiple times as he tried to escape capture after leading Confederate troops into battle against Grant; Another was Major James Witherspoon who had been driving his horse into position to cross a creek when he was hit by one of Early's rounds; And A third person later identified as Mrs Charles Pyle died from her injuries two days later after being taken prisoner by Early's force while sheltering among civilian women and children inside a church pulpits during the Battle of Fort Donelson). On October 5th 1863, another round from Stuart's battery killed three Confederates outside of town limits while they were reloading their weapons for anattack on Yankees positions nearby; It is also alleged that some bullets used during this engagement came from stores stored at Enterprise Arsenal located east of town near present-day Goodyear Road. - On July 4th 1864 (the day after Battle of Gettysburg), Confederate troops opened fire upon advancing Federal troop lines west of present day Winchester due to incorrect information given about then current events unfolding south of Charlottesville - Five bullets found recently at Enterprise Arsenal which may have come from that battle

In Florence, Kentucky in 1776, the Continental Congress passed a resolution calling for all citizens of the United States to rise up and fight for their country. The Philadelphia Committee of Correspondence published an advertisement in The Federalist Papers (1787) asking residents in thirteen states to enlist in the American Revolution. One hundred and seventy-six men from twenty-eight counties volunteered to fight. The first battle of Lexington was fought on April 19, 1775, by militia from Kentucky against militiamen from Massachusetts under General George Washington. In that battle, the British were able to withdraw with some losses but they inflicted significant damage on the Americans who lost about forty percent of their total strength. About two weeks later, on April 23rd, Patriot militia met British forces at Concord Bridge outside Lexington after days of skirmishing and artillery bombardment. After a daylong engagement that ended with a loss for both sides, British general Cornwallis withdrew his army back into Virginia without taking any prisoners or loot. On May 3rd, patriot militias attacked and destroyed three houses belonging to Lieutenant Colonel John Nelson near Bardstown because he had refused to support the British war effort. In November 1775 General Jervis's detachment arrived at Paducah Creek attempting unsuccessfully to cross overland there and join Washington's army east of Louisville through Kentucky into Virginia before winter set in
Florence, Kentucky is a town located in the Appalachian Mountains of central Kentucky. The population was 3,752 at the 2000 census. As of the 2010 census, it had grown to 4,021 residents. It is part of the Lexington metropolitan area and is home to both the University of Kentucky and The Louisville Slugger baseball club. The town was founded by General Henderson Roscoe in 1827 as a small trading post on the banks of the Ohio River. It grew quickly because of its strategic location between Cincinnati and Louisville, and its easy access to coal resources. By 1830, Florence had become an important center for trade with eastern Kentucky and Tennessee. In 1834, General Roscoe donated land for a college which would become The University of Kentucky. By 1850, Florence had become an important manufacturing community with businesses such as cheese factories and cotton ginners located along Main Street. During the American Civil War, Florence came under Confederate control until Union forces destroyed most of their munitions production in early 1862. Afterward, commerce returned to normal and by 1865 Florence had reached its pre-war population size of 3,752 people. However, growth slowed during Reconstruction due to low commodity prices and increasing competition from larger cities in central Kentucky such as Lexington and Bowling Green. In 1970 Florentine Mayor John Shimkus organized a referendum asking residents if they wanted annexation into Lexington proper or into downtown Lexington (then known as Southside). Over 97% voted in favor of annexation into downtown Lexington; this led to Florentine incorporation as a city on October 1st 1971. Florence, Kentucky is a small town located in Johnson County, Kentucky on the right bank of the Ohio River. The community was founded in 1829 by General David Dixon and his family. It was named for Florence, Italy. In 1852, the first school in Florence opened and was called the Female Academy. A post office was established in 1856, and the name of the town changed to Florenceville in 1908. The population of Florenceville peaked at 3,500 in 1920 but decreased to 1,500 by 1940. Since then it has slowly declining until its current population of 350 around 1930 when it became an unincorporated community again with no local government.
Florence was founded in 1795 by the brothers James and John Knox. The city was named for the Florence of Tuscany, Italy, which was then a provincial capital. In 1801, General Andrew Jackson assigned the town to Kentucky as part of his general Hastings Expedition. On December 12, 1802, General Jackson burned down the old courthouse in Florence and replaced it with a new one that still stands today.
