The community took its name from a nearby stream called "Florence." In 1861, Union troops burned down the courthouse here while they were retreating from Louisville after Battle of Perryville. During World War II, Florence played an important role as an airfield for American bombers and fighters based in western Kentucky and northern Indiana. The facility hosted both Boeing 707s and Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter planes during World War II. After the war, it reverted back to agricultural use until it became a center for manufacturing auto parts in the early 21st century. Today, Florence remains one of the most rural places in Kentucky with citizens who enjoy fishing, hunting, farming, logging,and hiking among their many interests.

Florence, Kentucky is a small, sleepy town located in the far northeast corner of Kentucky. The population was 3,232 as of the 2010 census. The first Europeans to set foot in what is now Florence were French colonists who arrived in 1765. For many years Florentine farmers managed the land around present-day Florence using a system where they would lease out plots of land to others for a year or two and then sell it back to the lessee at an increased price. In 1805, General James Wilkinson laid out a new grid plan for the area that included Florence on its northwest edge. The development that followed was based on cotton production and trade with nearby Tennessee and Georgia. When the American Civil War started, most of Kentucky sided with President Abraham Lincoln while Florence chose side with Confederate General John Custer. As a result, much of Florence was destroyed during fighting which also resulted in death tolls in excess of 100 people. After the war ended, Reconstruction began and many Italians and Irish began moving into downtown Florence from surrounding rural areas where they had been forced to work on plantations during the war. In 1924 Florentine native Luigi Villa purchased 4 acres near downtown from Jerald Hodge Sr., founder of Owensboro Courier Publishing Company which became one of America's largest daily newspapers after World War II when it relocated from LouisvilleKy.. Villa turned his home into what is now known as Villa Park which served as both his business headquarters and residence until his death in 1978. A major event that took place in Florence during this time was the opening night celebration forthe United States Olympic Committee's decision to include Italy as one of eight countries bidding for Ulysses S Grant's bid for president at their second international meeting held at Madison Square Garden on April 5-7th, 1896... This led to Italian immigrants starting businesses such as bakeries and restaurants throughout central Athens including establishments like Pizzeria Rustico (later Pizza Hut) that remain prominent today within walking distance or driving distance from downtown Florence... Thanks largely to this influx of immigrants beginning in earnest around 1920s there has been significant growth/ transformation taking place Downtown since then with several new cultural institutions (e.g., Artpark Gallery & Museum; Center Stage Theatre; KFC) coming online over ensuing decades... Today Downtown streetscape still features examples & remnants enjoyed by early 20th century Florentine Italians living & working Downtown including favorite haunts like Pizzeria Rustico & Trattoria della Scala

Florence played an important role in the development of the country's railroad system and its growth as an agricultural center. The city also played a significant role in the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution which granted voting rights to African Americans.
