Florence was founded in 1775 by General James Wilkinson. It was named for the city of Florence, Italy. The original town site was located on the banks of the Ohio River. When Wilkinson moved his headquarters to Louisville in 1777, he ordered his military forces to encamp at what is now known as Broadway and Third Street. In 1778, Wilkinson's successor, Colonel John Forbes, built a fortified palazzo on what is now Fourth Street. This structure served as the general's headquarters until 1814 when he moved to Lexington. In 1821, Governor Thomas Fordenburg designated Florence as the seat of county government for Breathitt County. The first courthouse in Florence burned down in 1826 but was rebuilt and used until 1861 when it burned again. In 1830, both Breathitt and Anderson counties were divided into two sections; Athens County became part of Florence while Ross County remained within Anderson County. In 1851, the state legislature created Knox County from parts of Clarke and Hardin Counties along with portions of Floyd and Pike Counties (including present-day Jeffersonville). That year also saw the first election in which citizens could vote by ballot instead of through an election campaign conducted by committee members appointed by local leaders. The first post office opened in Florence on October 14, 1852; it was called "New Albany" because that is where New Albany Township had been established earlier that year. On July 4th, 1858, much to the dismay of many residents who had grown accustomed to voting through an election campaign process they found more efficient than their predecessors had been - after all elections were held directy via tabulation machines - a separate system known as common voting began operation using punched cards instead
