Erlanger is a small town in Jackson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,766 at the 2000 census. It is the smallest community in Jackson County by population size. The first people to live in what is now Erlanger were Native Americans who hunted and traded with the French and British in the area for goods. In 1802, an act of Congress designated Erlanger as a seat of government for Jackson County. The first post office was established at Erlanger on November 3, 1802. The townsite that would become Erlanger was platted by Capt. Isaac Smith on January 12, 1803. Captain Smith had been sent out from Louisville to explore a new location for his company of cavalry called "the Bluegrass Boys." He arrived at what is now Erlangershire on December 6th and naming it after himself - "Erie". By 1830 there were over 100 settlers living in what would become known as the Town of Erie. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources and early industries - such as leather tanning and papermaking - which attracted both farmers and entrepreneurs alike. In 1840, during the American Civil War, Erie sided with Confederate States of America (CSA) over Union forces; this led to many local businesses being destroyed or closed down including one store located just east of today's intersection of State Routes 311 & 313 that became known as "The Paper Mill". 1 business remained open until 1907 when it burned down because too much water had been added to the millrace leading into Perryville Creek after construction began onwenting Hydraulic Dam #2 upstream across Perryville Creek from where current day Interstate 65 runs concurrent with State Route 311 & 313 - virtually destroying everything within sight! Erlanger was founded in 1819 by General David Erlanger and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after the creek that ran through it. In 1854, the town had a population of eighty-six residents and two stores. In 1865, the town had a population of one hundred thirty-six residents and four stores. In 1876, the town had a population of four hundred fifty-eight residents and eight stores. The first post office was established in Erlanger in 1876. The town lost its status as a village in 1902 when all of its businesses were shut down by order of the county government because they were not meeting financial qualifications for village status.
