The history of tasers in Erlanger, Kentucky can be traced back to the early 1800s. The first electric shock weapons were created by a team of engineers at General Electric in 1881. The device was called an "electric cattle prod." It consisted of a long, thin cable with a metal tip at one end. A person would hold the cable against their skin and the electric current would flow through the cable and into the victim's body. This method of torture was used extensively during the American Civil War as it was less likely to cause serious injury or death than firearms. In 1911, Tascosa Manufacturing Company began making electrical equipment for law enforcement officers in Erlanger. They marketed their products under the name "Taser." Tasers were initially designed for use on animals, but they soon became popular among police officers throughout America. In 1995, Taser Corporation merged with Raytheon Company. That company continued to manufacture and market tasers until 2009 when it announced that it would close all its U.S.-based manufacturing plants because of economic conditions. Today, there are several types of tasers available on the market: stun guns (which work like GUNS), bean bag guns, and pepper spray units. There is also an ever-growing number of people using tasers as self-defense tools; this trend has increased in recent years due to concerns over pedestrian fatalities caused by stun gun shots across America.

Erlanger, Kentucky is a small town in the Appalachian Mountains of western Kentucky. The population was 8,853 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hawkins County. The Erlanger economy is based on services and trade, with a primary focus being tourism. The first Europeans to visit what is now Hawkins County were traders and travelers from Virginia who followed the river valley for water routes in 1765. In 1802 John Marshall founded Marshalltown, Kentucky as a trading post on the Harlan River. In 1820 David Erlanger moved his family to this area and began farming land that he donated to the community in 1826. David's grandson, John A. Erlanger Sr., became one of America's leading farmers during Prohibition Era times when he organized and ran an illegal distillery in nearby Lawrenceburg. In 1933 Alonzo Haggerty bought manor house number 4 in downtown Erlanger from J.W. Kelley for $1,000 cash which served as home until 1984 when it was sold to Dick Heffner who restoration/maintained it as a museum until 2007 when it was closed due to financial difficulties. With significant population loss throughout much of Appalachia during the 20th century due to various factors such as alcoholism and rural-urban migration (the large influx of people into big cities following World War II), many small villages went out of business or disappeared altogether over time; however, Erlangar remained viable until around 1990. Today most residents are self-employed with some manufacturing activities including agriculture (mainly cheese production), candy making, printing technology, welding and fabricating products used by manufacturers all over eastern Kentucky. A couple dozen farmers still conduct extensive corn growing operations along with cattle raising also within commuting distance.
