The first scopes were invented in the early 1800s by a pair of German-American astronomers, Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Struve and Johann Georg Hess. The Struve telescope was the world's first to be used for astronomical observation. It was built in 1812 at Greifswald, Germany. The Hess telescope was designed by Johann Georg Beyer and built in 1814 at Darmstadt, Germany. After the Struve and Hess telescopes were made public, their design competition resulted in the construction of many new scopes over the next few years. By 1830, there existed over 100 different types of scopes being manufactured. In 1835, Englishman David Whitaker created a refractor telescope using a single lens mounted on an armature that rotated around its vertical axis to allow improved views of celestial bodies. This new type of telescope became known as a Whitakerian Telescope because it was developed by David Whitaker at his laboratories at University College London (UCL). Whitaker's work with this type of telescope helped improve astronomy worldwide and ushered in what is now known as modern astronomy. The town of Erlanger, Kentucky was founded in 1881 by J.B. Erlanger and his wife Anna. The Erlangers were the first family to own a scopes company in the area. In 1902, they started selling their optical products wholesale to other businesses in the area. In 1906, J.B.Erlanger died and his son John took over the business as an executive vice president. In 1928, John had his son-in-law Harry Potter buy out the business for him and continued running it as Potter & Company until he retired in 1971. The company moved its operations to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1973 and changed its name to Bausch & Lomb Incorporated then back to Potter & Company again in 1978 when Harry Potter died.(wikipedia)
Erlanger is a small town in Breathitt County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,971 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bowling Green Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to live in Erlanger was John Ariely, who came to the area with his family in 1817.(1) In 1820, Captain Edward Ladd of the " Continental" sailed through the Strait of Belleisle and anchored off present-day Erlanger; he named it after his home town of Edinburgh, Scotland." (2) In 1827, one acre (0.4 hectare) of land on what is now Main Street was donated by Colonel James Carlin to the Methodist Episcopal Church.(3) Reverend Gouverneur Emmons served as pastor from 1830-1835. In 1840s there were five stores and 15 houses in Erlanger. One resident said "the early British traders brought over axes and hatchets which they used for felling trees and logging...the men would go out into the woods at night to chop wood."(4) A post office was established at Erlanger on October 3, 1850.(5) The first mail Delivery took place on November 12th that year when Elisha Henderson received a package from Lexington with $10 worth of freight.(6) A railway line called “The Cincinnati & Louisville Railroad” connected these two cities in 1853 and made shopping trips possible for families living near both cities instead of having to buy goods miles away or take days off work to visit friends and relatives. By 1870 there were twelve businesses in Erlanger with a population of 350 residents. (7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13). In 1865 two brothers purchased land adjoining present day Court Road which became known as “The Addition” due to its location next door to an addition built by Elijah McCoy when he bought 5 acres (2 hectares) including this lot from Denton Hite for $50.(14). Mr. McCoy had moved from Ky forward in time so that this addition would have standing historical value despite being only 2 years old!(15). This property has been continuously owned by the McCullers since then until it sold along with all other familyowned land around it to make way for Interstate 65 construction just east of townline today! One hundred eighty nine years later still many people are buried on this property including vital ancestors such as pioneer Fannie McCullers Hunneman(16), her parents Daniel Matson Hunneman Sr., Fannie Jane Hunneman married Rev Jno Vaught(17), her great grandparents James Stroud Hunneman born c 1798 KY & Rachel Stroud Born 1800 KY died 1862 resides here also 2nd wife Elizabeth Ann Painter daughter Of Dr Samuel Painter reside here also 4 children: Esther Jane Painter born abt 1890 lives outside Erlangen Germany mary Ellen Painter born abt 1893 lives outside London England darcy Charles Painterborn 1909 die 1920

The town was founded in 1892 by John Erlanger and his wife Anna Major. The first post office in Erlanger was established in 1893. Its name was changed to Erlanger in 1907. In 1916, the town had a population of 460 and it moved from its original location on the east side of the river to what is now its downtown area. In 1922, a dam was built to power a hydroelectric power plant near present-day Erlanger and it became one of the most significant developments in the town's history. After years of growth and development, however, floods destroyed much of the residential infrastructure during both2007 and 2009 storms which affected much of central Kentucky as well as West Virginia One local business that has continued to thrive over time is called "The Keg" which began serving beer (and other refreshments) out front since 1898.
