The name comes from "erlang" or "erling," meaning run or swim in Scandinavian language. At its peak, Erlanger had about 100 residents and operated a gristmill, wagon wheel factory, blacksmith shop, grocery store, post office, and four churches. In 1872-73 settlers brought over some 130 acres (50 hectares) of land to create what is now the town center. By 1910 there were only seventy-five residents living in Erlanger proper and ninety percent of those lived within two miles (three kilometers) of its center.
