Erlanger, Kentucky is a small town in Johnson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,307 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous municipality in Johnson County after Bardstown. The first settlement in what is now Erlanger was a group of log cabins built by James Covington and his family in 1814. In 1825, the area was surveyed for a post office by George Aikin and named "Aiken's Landing" after him. In 1841, Confederate General John Steele advanced through Johnson County on his way to join General Andrew Jackson on the Tennessee Campaign and passed through Erlanger on his way. After the war ended, many of Steele's men migrated to Kentucky to start new lives and new businesses. One such business owner was Troup Ewing who ran an inn called The Castle until it burned down in 1851. The first store opened here in 1865 as The Smith Store Company by John Witherspoon Smith Sr., one of the pioneers of this community. His son John Witherspoon Smith Jr., continued operations until 1886 when he sold out to Jeptha Hennessey & Sons who operated it as The Hennessey Store from 1888-1920 before moving to Indianapolis where they operated it under that name for more than 50 years before selling it to Joe Nolen in 1984. During World War II (1942-1945), Erlanger served as a major staging area for Operation Neptune's Spear which aimed to drive Japan from its home islands during World War II; however, only about 10% of what locals said existed within any given building still remains today! What evidence does remain suggests that there was little or no damage done beyond normal wear and tear due primarily to weather patterns that were typical at this time; however some buildings have been extensively renovated with modern amenities while others remain unchanged since their original construction date!
