Erlanger is a small town in southwest Kentucky, United States. The population was 513 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington, KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by General David Erlanger and his wife Rebecca on July 12, 1825 as a spot for a new post office. The first post office opened in October of that year and was known as "Pine Gap". Erlanger, Kentucky is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. Erlanger is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Hardin County were Frenchmen and their Indian allies who arrived in 1785. In 1801, land grants were made to Andrew Jackson and James K. Polk for the purpose of developing this region into agricultural communities rich in natural resources such as coal, oil and limestone. The city of Lexington was founded by General Robert Eagan on November 15, 1821 as a trading post on the Cumberland River opposite where Erlanger now stands. It became an important cotton center due to its location near rivers that dried up during the Great Plains drought of 1873-1874. The city was named for General James Kountz (1786-1872), who spent time in Lexington before his military career led him to serve various Ulysses S. Grant administrations including Secretary of War under President Abraham Lincoln (1865-76). Erlanger is a small town in rural southwestern Kentucky. The population was 1,451 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1869 by John A. Erlanger and his wife Lucy as a small country hamlet named "Erlangerville." In 1881, the village became an incorporated town when all of surrounding counties merged to form one judicial district. The name of the town was changed to Erlanger in honor of John A. Erlanger's father, who had died in 1876. The original settlement consisted of just a few log cabins scattered around what is now the downtown area. By 1870, however, enough people had moved into the area to make it a viable community and began erecting more permanent homes. By 1880, the population had increased to just under 100 residents and businesses were established such as a store and post office. In 1907, during World War I, Erlanger played an important role in helping provide food for troops stationed on remote Pacific Islander bases; this contributed significantly to its nickname "Warrior Town." The war also helped spur development within the community; by 1920, there were over 30 businesses and more than 100 residents living inErlangerville proper while also serving as a hub for regional transportation.
