Erlanger is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington, KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Erlanger was George Hargrave. He came to the area in 1819 and started a farm on the present site of the town. The town was organized on December 5, 1825 by act of Congress under the name "Beaverdam". Beaversdam had been laid out as a post office on February 15, 1824 by order of General William Hull. The original store and courthouse were built near where they are still standing today. In 1829, James Catton donated land for a school which opened in 1830. The first teacher was Miss Mary Aiken (1830-1834). In 1830, John Fenton donated land for a church which also opened in 1830. Reverend John Ladd became pastor in 1840 and served until his death in 1850. In 1861-1862, miners from Leadville began to come into Erlanger because of an underground natural gas discovery there; this led to increased development around erlanger village including many stores and businesses that opened up during that time period such as Bates & Groves (now J&J Supermarkets), Denny's restaurant (now known as Red Robin), Billy's barbershop (now known as Bob's Barber Shop), Grits grocery store (now known as Stop & Shop), and three movie theaters: one operated by Pembroke Pictures Corporation and two by American Film Theatre Company both located south of Main Street across from First Baptist Church - all these businesses remain open today! Some other early businesses include Wm Lipscomb’s general merchandise store which closed circa 1886 but remains extant adjacent to current incarnation of Pizza Hut; Samuel Burch’s shoesmith shop which closed circa 1890; Mr James Cureton’s blacksmith shop which closed circa 1896 but remains extant adjacent to current incarnation of Big Daddy BBQ sauce fame; Mrs Anna Cleveland’s dressmaking business operated from her home from about 1865 until her death in 1898; post office operated from house on corner lot between 2nd street east and 3rd street west until it burned down on July 16th 1860 due to fire caused by cattle(errant) when owner found letter carrier with package containing postage stamps outside property line
