Erlanger is a town in Sullivan County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sullivan County. The name comes from "erlang" which means "to rock or sway." The first settler in Erlanger was John Gentry in 1809. He built a cabin on the neck of land that he purchased from the Cherokee nation for $2 per acre. In 1814, James Covington and his family settled in what is now Erlanger after traveling through Louisiana and Arkansas on their way to survey new lands in central Kentucky. They named their settlement after George Erlang (1782-1851), an early settler in Robertson County, Kentucky who helped lead the drive for statehood there in 1819. In 1838, David Kline established a store at present day downtown Erlanger with assets of $5,000. His son Jacob Kline became proprietor of the store and operated it until 1861 when it passed into hands of his nephew Alexander Kline Jr., who also held other commercial interests around town including shipbuilding and lumbering until his death in 1907. during these years several churches were established as well as public school buildings; one being erected by subscription soon after its organization (1839). A jail was added to the courthouse complex c1900 but it burned down within months following its construction; this event marked perhaps the most serious incident which befell town during its early days….A post office was established at Erlanger on November 6th 1840 by order of Governor Hardin Wills with Samuel Hogg appointed first postmaster…. By 1860 there were only five residents living within limits of present day town limits while some two hundred settlers lived scattered throughout various points near and far….The arrival of railroads brought about numerous changes not only within town but also acrossSullivanCounty as entire sections were platted for railroad lines….. pike transportation thus became available to burgeoning communities likeErlangleriver directly from eastern markets without having to leave their doorstep…. This opened up many opportunities for business development both inside and outside town center….. Most notably may have been Alex Ewing’s extensive real estate holdings which included tracts of land east of downtown along Paints Ferry Road‐the heartland stretching all the way back to Lancasterburgh where Quakerearly pioneers had founded their community more than two centuries earlier….. Erlanger is a small town in Pike County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington-Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community may have been named for Edward Erlanger, an early settler in this area. In 1811, he and his family built a log cabin on the banks of the Little Miami River. He also founded a grist mill in what is now Erlanger and operated it until 1849 when he sold it to James Biddle Sr., who ran it until 1840. In 1844, John Sikes purchased the mill from Biddle and continued operations until 1865 when he sold it to J.H. Curry Jr.. The mill produced flour for local markets and also used water power to run a woolen carding plant from 1868 to 1896. In 1901, Curry donated land for a high school which was completed in 1907 as Louisville High School (later renamed Eastern Kentucky University). In 1962, Erlanger's post office changed its name to Pruittsburg after Aileen Pruittsbie Pruitt—the daughter of then-Senator Estes Kefauver—who served as mayor from 1961-1963. The townspeople voted in 1964 to switch their municipal government from Republican to Democratic control under First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Atchison following her father's death that year; they held another election two years later which resulted in passage of a city charter giving residents more control over their affairs with no mayoral term or vote ever required beyond township meetings where all members were elected by popular vote only (it remains an open question whether or not she actually attended any meetings during her time as mayor).
