Erlanger is a town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1864 by Royal Erlanger and named for him. In 1868, the post office was moved from its original location to what is now Erlanger and the town took its current name. The first store in Erlanger was built on Main Street in 1868 by Royal Erlanger and his brother-in-law John Ladd. The store had two rooms with a floor of dirt and a room above it where they stored goods. A second store opened in 1870 on Third Street between Park Avenue and Cumberland Avenue. That store also sold items such as groceries, hardware, livestock, eggs, milk products, cigars and whisky. In 1891 the railroad arrived and changed things for the better for residents of Erlanger when it brought new jobs to town including cooks on trains coming into Hardin County from Louisville or Nashville etc., coal miners working underground under the earth's surface near what is now First Baptist Church (now known as First Christian Church), factory workers who made clothes for local people including women who worked inside549 Smithers Place; blacksmiths; farmers; lumberjacks; stagecoaches that stopped at points along their route making stops at churches along their way en route to Lexington or Frankfort respectively.; mail carriers delivering letters during daylight hours only out of town while larger vehicles drove through town delivering mail during midday hours.; restaurants opening up all overtown serving everything from burgers to pizza to fried chicken.: In addition to these general business activities there were also dances which were held every month or so outside ofchurch hall downtown while there was music playing,, poker games being played outdoors daily until prohibition came about in 1933., cockfighting being an important part of life here back then more than many places today
