The history of firearms in Erlanger, Kentucky dates back to the early 1800s. Gunsmiths and leatherworkers who resided in the town began making handguns and rifles for local farmers and hunters. By 1834, there were over fifty gunsmiths operating in Erlanger. A store was established on Main Street in 1868, which continued to be a business until 1972. The first shooting gallery in Erlanger was open to the public in 1892. Ammunition sales started at the store in 1905. In 1916, prohibition led to a decline in gun ownership and production withinErlanger; however, businesses such as the store continued operations until 1971. Today, there are several businesses located inside of Erlanger that still sell ammunition and guns; including NRA-certified gunsmith shop called "Gunsmith's Arms" and ammo outlet "Ammunition Emporium". The first settler in Erlanger was James A. Erland who came to the area in 1851. The town was platted on February 17, 1872, by J.B. Shearer and Fenton Crain with a population of twenty-one people. William Hays laid out the town Lots 6 & 7 on November 3rd, 1873 and built a store which became known as "The Lumberjack". A post office called Erlanger was established in 1875, and remained in operation until it closed on December 15th, 1909. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,887 people residing in the town limits; 1,521 households and 579 families residing in unincorporated areas surrounding the town limits; and 147 residents who lived elsewhere within Jefferson County for work or study purposes only. As of July 2006 data from Kentucky Department Of Transportation shows that use rates for roads have decreased significantly within city limits while increasing inside unincorporated areas; this may be due to an increase number (in 2009) of commuters using railroads over buses when travelling between Louisville/Jefferson City/ Frankfort Urban Area airports

Erlanger is a town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hardin County. Erlanger was founded in 1827 and named for General James B. Erlanger, who led Ulysses S. Grant's army through Kentucky during the Civil War. The first settlers were farmers who arrived by wagon train from Illinois in 1827. They started a small community on the banks of the White River and built log cabins. In 1830, they erected a store and post office which became known as "The First Store." A mill was built around 1835 and began to produce flour for local consumption and export to other parts of the country. In 1860, when Hardin County was created from part of Perry County, Erlanger became its county seat. The first courthouse was completed in 1865 and it served as the county government until 1902 when it was replaced by a new courthouse constructed using taxpayer money that also served as an educational institution for students from surrounding counties. A cotton gin operated by John Goudreau in 1909 yielded an estimated 20 million pounds (10 metric tons) of cottonseed fiber per year; this made Erlanger one of the most important cotton production centers in America during World War I because it could supply munitions manufacturers with raw cotton material needed to make warplanes and artillery shells without having to worry about transportation problems or market fluctuations caused by competition from other nations' crops. During World War II, Erlangers produced materials such as aluminum cans and locomotives used in aircraft manufacturing; these products were exported all over the world but due to wartime restrictions on exports there were few profits generated except for a few cents per can sold These perspectives changed after 1945 when President Harry Truman issued Executive Order 9981 which called for increased production within American industries necessary for postwar needs including military production; this led to more jobs being created throughout America than ever before while reducing tariffs on manufactured goods which helped increase economic growth throughout much of Europe resulting in major Allied victory against Nazi Germany
