The town of Erlanger, Kentucky is located in the eastern part of the state of Kentucky. The population was 5,830 as of the 2010 census. It is known for its bourbon Distillery and other tourist attractions. Erlanger was founded in 1864 by a group of men from nearby Prestonsburg. The town grew rapidly due to its location and infrastructure, which included a post office, school, brewery, store and mill. In 1928, the Erlanger Distillery was opened and became one of the largest distilleries in America. Today, the distillery produces over 100 different types of bourbons including Old Fashioneds and Bulleit bourbon whiskies. Erlanger is a small town in Johnson County, Kentucky, United States. It was founded by the family of Jacob Erlanger in 1825. The name "Erlanger" was derived from the Germanic word erni meaning "a rising sun." The town has a population of about 1,500 people and is located on the banks of the Little River. The primary industry of Erlanger is agriculture, with corn, soybeans, wheat and other crops being grown. There are also some small businesses and services that operate in the town. The first settler in Erlanger was Jacob Erlanger Jr., who arrived in 1825 from Germany. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street in what is now the downtown area of Erlangen. The land for today's town was donated to the community by Jacob's son-in-law Hugh Riley in 1858. In 1868, Isaac Cook immigrated to Kentucky and bought land north of present-day Erlangen along the Little River. Cook helped organize the county government and laid out roads and buildings as part of his plan to create an agricultural center where he could sell his goods. In 1872, John Smith established a grocery store at what is now Center Square within walking distance of all residents except those living on farms outside of town limits which were served by wagon trains delivering goods daily overland to these larger settlements within 2 miles (3 kilometers) radius including Richmondville (now home to Woodbury), Pittstontown (now home to Donelson), Lebanon (now home to Vermilion Springs), etc.. At this time there were only two churches – one Greek Orthodox and one Methodist – both serving as places where citizens could go for religious services free of charge during quiet times until more formal services were held at larger venues such as education or business meetings when large numbers could be expected turnout. From this humble beginning growth ensued as people began shopping for groceries not just local fare but items from all over eastern Kentucky due largely to railroad construction projects bringing new industrial jobs into central KY adding even more shoppers into what had once been simply an agricultural community with only its own farmers & livestock raising their products
