Erlanger is a town in Letcher County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,681 at the 2010 census. It has been recorded as a ghost town since it was abandoned by its citizens in 1869. The first permanent settler in what is now Erlanger was Samuel Easley who arrived in 1785 and erected his cabin on the present site of the town. In 1815, John Bledsoe moved from Bardstown to Erlanger and began trading with the Indians. He also built a small log cabin near where he lived for about 20 years before moving to Chicago, Illinois. In 1839, Michael Crouse founded the post office at the current location of Erlanger and named it after himself. At that time there were only three buildings in Erlangers full settlement including Crouse's house which still stands today (although it has been heavily damaged over time). The first store building which still stands today took up space on Main Street south of present day High School/Community Center when it opened on October 25th 1840 by contractor Ebenezer Goodloe under contract with Secretary of War James Kenton. A second store followed soon afterwards but closed due to lack of customers during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). A sawmill started operations around 1850 but ceased operations around 1870 because of an outbreak of cholera pandemic which struck Letcher County then and there; consequently most businesses closed down that year as well. There are several surviving buildings from this era including Goodloe's Store #2 (now frame house), Crouse's Store #3 (now used for storage) and Ebenezer Goodloe's Mill #1(now used for apartments). However all three structures have been extensively damage over time so currently none can be inspected inside or outside their original form making them museum pieces rather than living history examples like other old buildings located within walking distance such as Old Courthouse & Jail or Post Office Square!
