Erlanger is a small town in Clark County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bowling Green metropolitan area. The first settlers arrived in 1786 and were led by Captain James Robertson of Edinburgh, Scotland. Erlanger was named for General John Erlanger who fought in the American Revolutionary War and received a Medal of Honor for his actions at Battle of Saratoga. When the railroad came through this area in 1849, many farmers left to work on the tracks. By 1860, there were only 150 residents living near the railroads junction. A post office was established at Erlanger in 1868, and it remained open until 1959. The first store opened in 1870 and became known as The Gilded Cage Store before being renamed The First National Bank of Erlanger in 1889. During World War II, Erlanger was used as a training ground for troops from Clark County because it had excellent soil that would hold up to military construction materials such as sandbags and tanks. After the war ended, most of the buildings were destroyed by fire or damage from Hurricane Floyd but some remain standing today including Cooks House which served as an air raid shelter during World War II and still stands today with its original roofing system intact.
In 1811, the first land grant in Kentucky was made to John Erlanger. The grant was for 640 acres of land near present-day Uniontown. In 1824, the state legislature passed a bill creating an agricultural college in Louisville. The college was founded as the Agricultural and Mechanic Institute and became the University of Louisville in 1870.
