Erlanger is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. It is the seat of Hardin County and lies on the border of Johnson and Clay counties. The population was 2,636 at the 2010 census. The first recorded mention of Erlanger was in 1801 when it was called "Erie". In 1819, it was renamed "Erlanger" after General James B. Erlanger (1784-1857), a hero of the Mexican War and one of the most decorated soldiers in that conflict. The town became an important cotton milltown during the late 19th century as more people migrated to the area for work in new mills opened up along the Cumberland River. Erlanger has had its share of struggles over the years such as two fires that destroyed most of its downtown business district in 1906 and 1970; however, through all these challenges, Erlangers residents have always played an active role in keeping their community thriving. Today, Erlangers are known for their delicious local food products such as sweet potatoes and ham hocks, as well as their gentle farming practices which produce high quality hay, cornmeal flour and other agricultural products that are sold throughout central Kentucky.

Erlanger, Kentucky is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. Erlanger is located on the banks of the Bluegrass River and includes parts of the neighborhoods of Bellefontaine and Trimbletown. The first permanent settler in what is now Erlanger was James Witherspoon in 1813. He built a cabin on a bluff above the river where he operated a ferry service until his death in 1824. Other early settlers included David Fenton (1815-1826), John McGee (1820-1827), and Isaac Meigs (1795-1800). The town was named for General George Washington Butler who served as its delegate to Congress from Hardin County from 1802 to 1805 and again from 1812 to 1814. In 1865, General James Pemberton createdHardin County, Kentucky out of portions of several other counties including Hardin and Putnam which had been organized as part of Lawrence County., Erlanger became one of its three townships within that county.. On November 8, 1862 Union general John Custer's column marched through town on their way south to Lynchburg. A crowd estimated at 10,000 people quickly gathered along High Street outside Custer's temporary military hospital believed they were witnessing history when he entered with his staff and artillery into what seemed like an unending parade down High Street to Armory Square where they dispersed without seeing or hearing anything extraordinary happen inside...Custer then walked up Main Street toward Trinity Episcopal Church before turning left towards French Hill Road which would have led him right past our schoolhouse door! The only thing that could be heard over the hubbub coming from all around town was “Aaarrggghh!” After briefly looking inside while everyone else shouted some questions aloud about why there wasn't an alert sent out yet given this huge influx of troops it seems pretty clear that no battle happened here today but still lots going on historically!
