Erlanger, Kentucky is a small town located in the southeastern corner of Breathitt County. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1881 by German immigrants, and named after George Erlanger, an Austrian general who fought in the Mexican-American War. The community developed slowly until it became a small farming village during World War II when many local residents joined the military to fight in Europe. After the war, Erlanger experienced rapid growth as a result of its location on energy resources and tourism. Today, Erlangers are known for their apple orchards and rural lifestyle. The first modern ammunition was developed in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and Claude Romer, who named it "Compound Rifle Ammunition." This type of ammunition consisted of a lead or copper cartridge with a propellant charge, which was inserted into the barrel of a gun. The first use of powder charges in firearms occurred in 1797 when British forces fired cannonballs filled with shot putty at Fort Duquesne to test the effects. Breechloading pistols and rifles began using this type of ammunition in 1804. The development of new types of cartridges led to increased production costs, so on July 1, 1852, an agreement was made between the United States Government and Winchester Repeating Arms Company for American manufacturers to produce six-round detachable box magazines for their breech loading guns. These magazines were designed to allow quick reloading without having to remove the entire magazine every time you needed ammo. However, these innovations did not always go over well with American consumers; as a result, Winchester stopped producing them two years later. By 1861, revolver manufacture had become such an important part of the U.S military that Springfield Armory had produced over one million rounds per day for army revolvers alone!
Erlanger is a small town in Logansport County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest community in Logansport County and the second-smallest in the state of Kentucky. It is part of the Louisville–Jeffersonville metropolitan area. The first settlers to Erlanger were James and Mary Atchison who arrived around 1800. They built a log cabin on what is now First Street and named it after their home town of Edinburgh, Scotland. By 1825, they had moved to a more permanent location on what is now Second Street. The Atchisons had three children, James Jr., Johnathan (Jock) and Sarah Jane Atchison: all who lived to adulthood and all of whom served as farmers or merchants in their home town during their lifetimes; one died young at age 30 years old while serving as postmaster for Erlanger from 1832 until his death in 1876. In 1869, Isaac Erlanger purchased 640 acres (240 ha) of land from David Humphreys for $4 per acre ($/ha). The purchase included some farmhouses that still stand today including those located on Main Street between Third and Fourth Streets; these buildings were used as schoolhouse classrooms from 1840 until 1954 when they were replaced by new classrooms constructed on Third Street between High School Road and US 71W just south of downtown Erlanger. In 1901-1902, President William McKinley made an advertising trip through Logansport County to promote Ulysses S Grant's presidential candidacy; he stop at Erlangers Methodist Church where he was introduced to local farmer Jock McCulloch by Rev John Witherspoon Fenton who then showed him around the village before driving back eastward along US 71W with McKinley's car following close behind. After World War II ended in 1945 there was No discernible civilian growth or development taking place within approximately 10 miles (16 km) radius east of downtown Louisville until about 1960 when industrial activities created an increased demand for housing which eventually led to redevelopment efforts adjacent thereto includingErlangers Elementary School being erected adjacent thereto circa 1964-1965 which resulted in much positive public reaction culminating with designation as a National Historic Landmark District encompassing present day easternmost portions of Logansport County on November 20th 1978 under provisions Of Section 4(a)(1) Of The National Register Of Historic Places Act “For special reasons” due primarily To its association With America's Morristown Ammunition Plant Which operated From 1942 Until 1959 And Produced munitions Used In World War II This plant Located Just South East Of Today's Town Of Erlanger Was A Significant Factor In Downtown Louisville Development
Erlanger was founded in 1818 by John Erlanger and his wife Margaret. The town began as a small trading post on the Unica River. By 1860, the town had developed into a large rural community with over 1,000 residents.
