From 1868 to 1984, Elizabethtown was a center of revolver and shotgun manufacturing. Rifle production began in the early 1800s, but handguns dominated until the late 1800s. In 1868, John Brown & Company produced its first revolver in Elizabethtown. The company became well-known for their revolvers, which were used by law enforcement and military personnel throughout Kentucky and America. By 1924, Brown & Company had transitioned to shotguns and ceased producing revolvers. Beginning in 1904, Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation (Winchester) began manufacturing rifles in Elizabethtown. With its primary market being the militia and police forces of America, Winchester produced high-quality firearms that enjoyed widespread popularity across the country. The company continued to produce firearms until 1964 when it merged with Colt Firearms Corporation to form what is now Colt Incorporated. During its time as a jointly owned subsidiary of Winchester and Colt, both companies produced some of the most popular handguns ever made: the Model 1903 Springfield rifle, the Model 1905 Revolver, and finally the Model 1911 Pistol. Elizabethtown is a town in and the county seat of Perry County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 6,878 at the 2010 census. Elizabethtown is located on the Cumberland River. The first permanent settlement in what is now Perry County was made by James Robertson and his brother David Robertson on March 14, 1775, when they moved from Henderson County, Tennessee to start a new life on the Cumberland River. The town of Elizabethtown was chartered on January 24, 1819 by order of Governor John Morton. It was named for General George Washington's wife Eleanor (1759-1836). At its incorporation as a village on December 12, 1846 it had a population of 2,500 people. In 1851Elizabethtown became home to one of the country's first grain elevators which processed corn and other crops into flour and feed for local farmers. In 1865 two generals – Ulysses S. Grant and Philip Sheridan – were visiting Perry County when they decided to make Elizabethtown their headquarters while they conducted military operations in eastern Kentucky; Grant stayed there for three days before returning home to continue his campaign against Confederate forces in Tennessee but Sheridan stayed until he left for good on November 26th: "A clean-shaven young general with dazzling uniforms", as one newspaper reported him then, "made an instant impression upon those who met him" during his stay in Elizabethtown. Elizabethtown has been known mostly as a small community that grew around its local Grain Elevator which continues to operate today - providing jobs for many people within the community!

As more people became familiar with flashlights, they began to see them as potential weapons instead of just illumination tools!

In 1941, Elizabethtown was renamed after then-Governor William Fenton Elmore because it became apparent that other communities in Harlan County were also receiving too much attention from development firms. However,Elizabethtown still retains some of its mid-20th century characteristics, such as its vibrant downtown district and large number of commercial buildings.
Elizabethtown was founded by General David Wilkinson in 1786. The town was named after Elizabeth, the wife of Wilkinson. The first courthouse in Elizabethtown was built in 1792. In 1814, the town became a county seat and it remained so until it was annexed by Louisville in 1871. The population of Elizabethtown peaked at 15,000 in 1920 and declined to 12,500 by 1970. However, its decline has not been as great as some other places within Kentucky that have seen declines in their populations over time.
