Elizabethtown is a small town in the U.S. state of Kentucky, population 9,837 as of 2010. The village was founded in 1814 by refugees from the American Revolution who had fled to Ireland. It became a county seat in 1859 and was named for Elizabethtown, County Clare, Ireland. The first settler in Elizabethtown were two families: the McNaughtys and the Neumanns. The McNaughtys arrived in 1798 and erected a cabin on current-day Rockport Road. They were followed by other pioneers to these areas over the next few years including John Witherspoon (1799), James Neill (1800), Nicholas Ketchum (1804), Peter Fenton (1808), John French (1810) and Isaac Chamberlain (1812). In 1814, three brothers from Cork erected a log cabin near present day Perkinsville on Old Highway 26/I-75W. This was also the site of one of America's first churches: First Presbyterian Church which was built in 1815 by Rev Dr George Washington Kimball and his brother Samuel Kimball with help from Scotsman Major General Andrew Jackson Carden. In 1861, when Louisville became an independent city, Elizabethtown became part of that city's newly formed district called "CentralKentucky". On January 1st, 1890 CentralKentucky merged into Henderson County which then became part of Louisville proper. In 1907 Elizabethtown incorporated as a town under Chapter 1039 of the Kentucky Revised Statutes The community experienced significant growth during World War II with military production centers being established here such as Sperry Gypsum Company at Camp David and Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company at Park Row Plantation just outside town limits; both operations survived into postwar decades unchanged and remain highly important today within their respective industries In 1948-1949 when white flight began moving out of Louisville—one result being increased competition for jobs within central Kentucky among new arrivals—the old post office building located on Third Street between Main Avenue and Knox Drive served as temporary housing until it could be replaced by more permanent facilities . The original Post Office Annex building still stands today but has been converted into apartments . According to 2001 census data , there are now only 8 residents living in Elizabethtown full time while 2 work locally or travel extensively for their job opportunities In 2003-2004 local developer Don Gentry purchased what used to be known as "old" McCracken Paper Mill property adjacent to Old Highway 26/I-75W where he developed several thousand residential units over several years . One effect this has had onElizabethtown is that although many people continue to commute into downtown Louisville they no longer use Third Street between Main Avenue and Knox Drive Consequently businesses along Third Street have suffered since they are not able to service customers coming down Second Avenue or Fourth Street

Elizabethtown is a small town in Jefferson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 3,821 at the 2010 census. It was part of the Louisville metropolitan area. Elizabethtown is named after Elizabeth Woolridge Grant, an American stateswoman who served as Secretary of State from 1881 to 1889 and as the first female senator from Kentucky. The town was founded in 1820 by James Mclntyre and others as a log cabin settlement on Winchester River. It became a post office in 1825 and a town in 1830. In 1839 it became the seat of Jefferson County. The present courthouse was built in 1886. In 1870s John Fenton built a large gristmill on the banks of the river near where today's Elizabethtown Elementary School stands. Fenton also developed land around his mill for agricultural purposes including a large lot now used for retail shopping Venmo's Pharmacy and other businesses that sprung up around this time such as J & L Ford Factory which still stands today across from Trinity Episcopal Church on Main Street. The Elizabethtown Manufacturing Company manufactured goods such as cloth, shoes, saddles, wagon parts and tools until its bankruptcy in 1916; however some evidence suggests that this company may have been more successful than others due to its close proximity to several key markets— notably Louisville—and its investment into marketing products specifically to these regions . In 1954-1955 two electric locomotives were brought into service by Louisville & Nashville Railroad (L&N) at what is now Elizabethtown Depot - one later donated to Towson University (now Maryland University College). This event marking both an important technological milestone for L&N Railway operations in central Kentucky (the first electrified line north of Indianapolis), and also signaled something larger: change withinElizabethtown itself with people starting to abandon their pioneer ways for modernity . Today much of downtownElizabethtown remains unchanged with only minor updates throughout history; however many storefronts located along Second Street between Market Place/Pleasant Valley Road and First Avenue remain current examples of early 20th century architecture withstood repeated attempts by developers over the years to demolish them or replace them with fancier stores . In 1814, the town was destroyed by a fire that destroyed many of its buildings. However, Elizabethtown quickly rebuilt and prospered again. In 1865, Elizabethtown became the capital of Kentucky. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Elizabethtown experienced a rapid growth as a shopping and cultural center. It also played an important role in the development of Kentucky's state government. In 1951, Elizabethtown was designated as the state capital of Kentucky again.
