Elizabethtown, Kentucky is a small town in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The population was 3,717 at the 2010 census. Elizabethtown is located in southeasternKentucky and straddles the border of Randolph County and White County. It is bordered by the states of Virginia to its north and West Virginia to its east. The first people to live in what is now Elizabethtown were Native Americans who may have been cached here when they roamed this area during the late Pleistocene epoch around 12,000 years ago. By 1800, white settlers had begun moving into this area from nearby Louisville and other eastern settlements. In 1812, General James Wilkinson met with George Rogers Clark on land that would later be named Elizabethtown after his wife, Elizabeth Jackson Wilkinson (died 1814). When Wilkinson became governor of Kentucky in 1816, he decided to move his government from Louisville to Elizabethtown because it was closer to his seat at Frankfort than any other location in the state. In 1865-1866, Confederate forces burned down much of downtown Elizabethtown as part of an effort to drive Union troops out of the community during their battle for control over southern Kentucky Valley region; however, most damage was done within one block of Main Street where several stores were destroyed including those owned by Mrs. John Hardin (the local postmistress) and her husband James Hardin II (of Johnsonville fame). After the war ended in 1865, many residents returned home but others continued living on farms outside town for another several decades until new development began pouring into town during the early 21st century due largely to two things: job growth associated with neighboring counties’ coalmining industries and a growing demand for housing throughout eastern Kentucky related both to increased manufacturing activity within easy commuting distance as well as an increasing number of people experiencing high levels of poverty orustainability due primarily to limited access either to affordable transportation or affordable public health care options nearby while also facing significant challenges such as extractive mining practices which negatively impacted water supplies essential for crops while also contributing significantly To climate change concerns brought about by emissions released from numerous mines activities across central Appalachia; these issues led some residents within town outspokenly calling for reversal or modification/update/replacement Of zoning laws governing both residential density & developments along main street so that more environmentally friendly buildings could be built instead which has yet To materialize However despite some initial setbacks & mixed results with very few green buildings being erected since then locals continue voicing their intent For more sustainable architecture & methods becoming increasingly popular among professionals engaged In creative work as well As everyday residents alike
