Elizabethtown is a town in Johnson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by Revolutionary War veterans on May 20, 1800. Elizabethtown was named after General George Washington's wife and mother-in-law, Elizabeth (1746-1827). The first permanent settlers in what became Elizabethtown were three brothers who arrived from Pennsylvania in 1799. They built a log cabin on the site of present day Elizabethtown High School and started to cultivate land around it. In 1801, they organized themselves into a town corporation and renamed their new settlement "Elizabethtown." They built a courthouse and jail which still stand today as evidence of their early success. In 1825, the legislature designated land near Elizabethtown as Virginia Military Institute (VMI) ground for military training of Kentucky boys to prepare them for service in the Mexican-American War. This designation helped to spur development within the community as farmers began raising horses and sheep on newly purchased lands east of town while also building stores and homes to house their troops. In 1861 when Confederate forces occupied Johnson County during the American Civil War, many residents chose not to fight because there seemed no real possibility that they would be liberated before their own home states could do so. Many of these men later took up arms against slavery in various causes throughout Reconstruction across America until national policy moved away from supporting slaveowners during that era by 1865. After the war ended in 1865, many soldiers returned home but many others continued living outside Johnson County due to its difficult economic conditions at that time. By 1870, most people living within Elizabethtown had either left or died out; only six families remained constant through all these changes including those who founded VMI over 100 years ago! A post office called "Elizabethton" was established in 1871; it changed its name to "Elizabethtown" in 1907 when postal service was reestablished within Johnson County after being suspended by state officials due to financial problems caused by World War I munitions production quotas set forth by President Woodrow Wilson’s New Deal program! During World War II much of what remains today within Elizabethstown were destroyed by bombing raids conducted by American forces acting under orders from General Dwight D Eisenhower following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941; this included both high school buildings along with several other businesses located just off Main Street! However much remains standing such as original German mortar rounds still lying scattered about some yards from where they were found! More recently restoration work has been taking place at nearby Main Street Elementary School which reopened its doors September 2nd 2009 after being closed for over 30 years! In addition a small museum has been erected adjacent to this school commemorating local history including items related to air combat operations during WWII! Finally one can visit this museum every summer duringfwrist season for an overall unique experience...a must see if visiting any area inside or outside Johnson County!!

The town grew rapidly after it was designated as a trading post on the Cumberland River. In 1827, the town had a population of 1,500 people and it became an incorporated municipality with a government that included a Mayor and Board of Aldermen. In 1881, thetown's population reached 5,000 people and it became an independent city with its own government. The city experienced rapid growth due to industry and commerce. By 1920, Elizabethtown had a population of 10,000 people and it became an international city with a branch office in London.
