During this time period there were also several other large businesses such as Laddie Brothers Coal Merchants which operated from mills located near present day downtownElizabethtown In 1861 during Confederate rule over Kentucky growth slowed due to pro-Union sentiment among many residents; however some new businesses sprang up like J C McGuire's grocery store on Ninth Street that became very successful due to its low prices and wide variety of groceries items sold After Union victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House in 1865 most business shutdowns ceased while people returned to their normal lives; however few original buildings still remain standing today including: G A Hanks Tobacco Plant (now home to PNC Bank), Post Office (now demolished), Mrs Meeks Store (now Goodwill Industries), WH Johnson Grain Elevator (former carriage house now used as apartments), First Baptist Church (now Perdue Farms) and Mrs Smith's Clothing Store (former mercantile building currently used as offices). After Reconstruction following Civil War ended most these businesses reopened but only after they passed stringent new regulations put into place by Congress designed to prevent reopening of old civil rights abuses; this included requiring business owners to get segregationist race photos taken before opening their doors exempting them from future regulations . This period saw significant economic development for Elizabethtown with many new homes being erected along Main Street while much older brick buildings continued to be used for various purposes such as schools, churches or government buildings until they were all burned down during World War II . While much has changed since then including switch from central heating systems to air conditioning newer construction has destroyed many historic structures making it difficult if not impossible for anyone living here today to experience what life was like back when these areas were active businesses .
