Elizabethtown is a small town in Covington County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 7,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Elizabethtown were a group of men and women who came overland from Maryland in 1815. They gathered around the log cabin thatched with hickory logs that stood on the present site of downtown Elizabethtown. The town was named forElizabeth taverner (1792-1858) who built a house near where the courthouse now stands. In 1827, when John Hanks founded what is now known as Bardstown bourbon distillery, he chose Elizabethtown as his headquarters because it was then one of the most developed communities in southern Kentucky and had many rich cultural experiences to offer its citizens. Bardstown made quite an impact on Elizabethtown with its wide variety of products such as whiskey, beer, cigars and other liquor products. A Distinguished Citizens Award has been given annually to one resident or business owner for excellence in community service since 1984 by Mayor Donnie Nolen’s office. Many local businesses remain intact today including L&L BBQ (formerly known as Longhorn BBQ), William “Crazy Legs” Sexton’s restaurant/barbecue joint which served up some ofKentucky’s best smoked meats until 2005 when Prohibition stopped production; JJB Bicycles; and George “The Gator” McCabe's general store which continues to be open today despite being closed for decades due to fire damage caused by lightning strikes! Within two blocks of each other are two other early settlements: White Sulphur Springs and Maxwellville which became parts ofElizabethtown after their residents left nearby Williamsburg following Bloody Sunday (April 17-21, 1861). On April 14th 1861 more than 10% (almost 3200 people)of all slaves living within three miles (5 km)of Louisville were captured during Confederate General Robert Ewell's raid on that city resulting in vastackle losses for Union forces including almost 400 casualties among men and women alone! Many slaveholders fled into hiding leaving behind their families with little hope for safety or return should things get too rough back home... so it was no surprise that many blacks in central Kentucky also relocated en masse to Elizabethtown during this time frame including many free African Americans who had managed to escape bondage before it became law! When Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived at Elizabethtown late on April 21st 1861 he discovered widespread arson throughout the area!! Aftermath report states "There appeared not only buildings but furniture entire houses had been plundered." This event led directly to later efforts by the townspeople to rebuild!!!!! ElizabethTown experienced another period of growth beginning around 1870 when several new churches were built including First Baptist Church located just east of Main Street; Second Baptist Church located north side between Highways 21st & 22nd Streets; Methodist Episcopal Church located south side between Highways 21st & 22nd Streets; Presbyterian Church located west side between Highways 21st & 22nd Streets; and finally Bethel Lutheran Church situated across from Sarah Tilton's grocery store on Highways 21st & 22nd Streets! In total there were six churches established within five years!!! One could easily imagine how busy this scene must have been given that there were over 4500 people living within three miles (5 km)of downtown Elizabeth Township at this time!!!! There wasn't any public transportation available so religious services took place either inside or outside!!! When World War I began hostilities commenced unrestricted warfare against all belligerent groups both inside America and internationally starting September 11th 1914 !! 1 out 4 residents worked for war effort whether they knew it or not !! On November 5th 1915 ladies found employment at local munitions factory starting at $1 per day !! Production increased rapidly due to need for materials however soon afterwards plant shut down due to lack orders :( Although generally uneventful locals continued working long hours nonstop until May 1917 when labor shortage ended suddenly thanks go American Expeditionary Forces newlyweds - Lady Bird Johnson !! All workers received $10 per week!! Postwar boom started immediately with stock market crash followed by rapid economic development makingElizabethborough one Of The Richest Towns In America By 1918" ....During these years much social change occurred as well.... With increasing international trade opportunities came increased immigration especially from Germany .... Catholics moved out while Methodists shifted allegiance towards Protestant denominations ...... major industries included baking bread, dyeing clothes etc......... By 1920 only 2%of population remained rural while 98% resided within 3 miles (5 km)of city limits

Elizabethtown was founded by the Smiths in 1786. The town was called Elizabethtown because of the nearby Elizabeth River. The Smiths were from Virginia and had come to Kentucky to establish a farm. They named their farm Elizabethtown because of Queen Elizabeth I of England. The Smiths built a log cabin on the bank of the Elizabeth River, which they called their " boasted seat." The town grew rapidly after it was established. In 1800, the town had 5 buildings and 100 residents. By 1810, the population had grown to 1300 people and there were five businesses in the town. In 1816, the town voted to become an independent republic. In 1821, it became a part of Kentucky statehood. In 1830, the riverboat company arrived in Elizabethtown and began trading goods with America's new westward expansion. By 1840,Elizabethtown had 10 buildings and 300 residents.In 1851-1852,the pioneering work done by Atherton Witherspoon on his famous land survey led to continued growth in Elizabethtown as well as other settlements across what is now West Virginia and Ohio County into which Witherspoon scattered his holdings while surveying for a new home for himself and his family

However, as economic conditions began to decline in the mid-19th century, Elizabethtown struggled to keep up with the more developed communities around it. By 1920, its population had shrunk to fewer than 1,000 people and it ceased being an independent municipality altogether.
