Elizabethtown is located on the east bank of the River Severn and on its north side. In 1865, General Andrew Johnson stopped en route to Louisville on his way home from an unsuccessful campaign and spent two days visitingElizabethtown before continuing on to Danville downstream where he had been planning to build a bridge across River Severn instead which failed catastrophically when river levels rose unexpectedly above expectations .
