The city was founded by James Barbour and his family in 1859 as part of the process of annexing much of eastern Kentucky into the newly formed United States. The city's growth was due to its location on the Ohio River and its easy access to transportation, especially during the early days when it was only a small town. Elizabethtown experienced some major riots in 1861 that followed the violence associated with Civil War efforts. The riots were caused by an attempt by Unionists to gain control over portions of central Kentucky that were still loyal to Confederate forces. Despite this history, Elizabethtown remains an important community for many reasons. Its location at the confluence of two large rivers makes it an ideal spot for shipping and commerce; its downtown is home to several restaurants and businesses; and its residents are engaged in many different types of economic activities including education, healthcare, and manufacturing.

Elizabethtown is located in Daviess County, Kentucky, and was founded by the Dunbar family in 1798. The town became a part of the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 1802. It was designated a Federal Reserve District in 1913. Elizabethtown has a population of 509 according to the 2010 census. The community has a large history based on its location and residents have contributed significantly to its development over time. The first people to live in Elizabethtown were the Dunbars, who arrived from Scotland in 1798. They built a stockade near what is now the southeastern edge of town and named it Elizabethburg after their queen consort, Elizabeth II. In 1802, when Kentucky became a state, the Dunbars moved out of Elizabethtown and established themselves at Mount Lebanon (now Tellico Hills). The community continued to grow until around 1910, when it had approximately 1,000 residents living within its boundaries. However, due to limited transportation options and an unwillingness among many citizens to leave their homes for unknown reasons,Elizabethtown declined rapidly during this time frame. By 1930 only about 100 people remained within the original limits of town square. However, despite this decline in popularity throughout much of the 20th century, Elizabethtown experienced significant growth starting around 2000 thanks largely to two initiatives:1) A $10 million dollar grant from then-Governor Steve Beshear2) An influx of new immigrants who began moving into town as part of Appalachia’s growing job market following changes within American society that led to increased opportunities for minoritiesduring those years In recent years though much progress has been made such as expanding broadband service and improvingcommunity infrastructure; many people continue residing insideElizabethtown walls each day
Elizabethtown was founded by white settlers in 1775 and became a official town in 1800. The town prospered due to its natural resources, including coal and limestone, and its location on the Ohio River. In 1871, Elizabethtown received city status and began to develop as a major economic center. However, during the 1960s and 1970s, Elizabethtown suffered from population decline and economic decline. In 2013, Elizabethtown was consolidated with nearby Parkersburg into the new city of Parkersburg-Elizabethtown.
