The town was named for Lt. Gov John Elizabeth (1773-1854), one of the first women to serve as an officer in the United States government. In 1819, President James K. Polk appointed Mrs. Elizabeth as Commissioner of Internal Revenue on behalf of Kentucky residents who had long complained about unfair taxation by Pennsylvania authorities. In 1861, after Confederate forces invaded Kentucky, General George Buell occupied Elizabethtown and began destroying buildings and property within its limits to impede Ulysses S. Grant's military movements through central Kentucky during the American Civil War (1861-1865). After Union forces took control of Kentucky in 1865, General Buell's unit surrendered at Libby Court House near Elizabethtown on July 24, 1865; all but two members of his force were captured or killed.] Elizabethtown experienced some fairly significant changes during its early years: First came slavery: One resident recalled that "early [in] this community there was much slave working." Slavery ended when Ohio State seceded from the Union in 1859.[1] Second came industrialization: A large factory built by Winton Brothers near present day downtown became one of the most important economic engines driving growth throughout northeastern KY during this time period; it helped create jobs for many people including many locals born and raised here such as banker Winton himself[2]. Third arrived big box stores with their associated traffic jams: These businesses poured into town during prohibition (1912-1920) because they could not find anywhere else to get their products marketed effectively enough given Prohibition's statewide ban on alcoholic beverages across state lines (see also "Famous Citizens" below). Fourth came social change: Women soon started to gain political power here following passage of laws granting voting rights to women in 1924,[3] while men continued to play an ever growing role both inside and outside politics until well into our current era... Fifth arrived Interstate highways which quickly changed everything—again!: Just outside town today you can still see remnants from one particularly massive I-65 construction project which left behind a wide swath of destruction across much rural territory adjacent to town—a sight often reminiscent of those days before cars became ubiquitous! Sixth arrived new technology...and thereby another layer cake added onto an already complex webof cultural influences!: With television becoming increasingly popular starting around 1950[4], residents here began experiencing unique sorts of technological advances which interacted with each other uncontrollably over ensuing decades culminating with what we now refer to as 'the internet age'… Seventh finally arrived….the great migration!!!:[5][6][7] There has been no real decrease or diminishment in population size since then however density has increased somewhat due To permanent/short term guest workers employed by various businesses/governmental entities sweeping through eastern KY frequently seeking employment opportunities without proper paperwork oriblical vetting process

Elizabethtown was founded by Captain James Caldwell in 1792. The town was named for Elizabeth, the daughter of George Washington. In 1807, the United States Congress passed a bill naming the town in honor of General Andrew Jackson. The townsfolk voted to rename the town after Jackson on July 4th, 1807.
