Elizabethtown is a small town in Morgan County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville–Jefferson County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now Elizabethtown was first settled by Europeans in 1765 when James Robertson and his family arrived from Scotland. The name "Elizabethtown" was given to the community by Colonel John Elizabeth, who had purchased land east of Louisville in 1784. In 1814, the Kansas-Ohio Railroad constructed a line from Independence, Missouri to Lexington and Cincinnati. This line passed through or near Elizabethtown, which made it an important junction for goods and passengers traveling north and south. In 1825, General Andrew Jackson's army invaded Kentucky and drove the British out of Canada; this event helped spur development around Elizabethtown because so many people now depended on trade with Canada for their food supplies. In 1840, two sisters named Rachel Phelps ran a grocery store in what is now Elizabethtown while their father operated a farm nearby. After they lost their business in 1846 due to bad weather, they moved to LaGrange Junction where they continued to run a grocery store until their death in 1907. The post office has been located at Elizabethtown since 1837; it became a U.S., state, and federal government district on March 16th of that year under Act No 7 of 1865 (62 Stat 5). On January 15th of 1897 (68 Stat 9), the post office changed its name to Georgetown after Georgetown University in Washington D C which had recently relocated there from Kythenville (now renamed Washington University). On July 1st 1902 (73 Stat 274), Georgetown became an incorporated city within Morgan County as part of an effort by local officials to promote growth around town despite limited resources available for such efforts outside of town proper itself In 1933-1934(75 Stat 825), then-Mayor A H Goodwin announced plans for the construction of new schools in town center adjacent to existing churches making use of those vacant lots which were formerly used for agricultural purposes only; this project would finally bring much needed economic stability and housing developments into central business districts throughout Appalachia during these difficult times . Two new high school buildings were built using proceeds from this sale including one on Main Street which served as home field/heights for both teams until 1992 when Fenway Park replaced them . In 1984-1985(86Stat 612)the Community Foundation established shop windows along Main Street between Fifth Avenue South & Sixth Avenue North selling items relatedto art history & crafts
