Elizabethtown is a small town located in Perry County, Kentucky. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. In 1814, Colonel John Morgan founded the village of Greensboro on what is now the eastern border of Elizabethtown. In 1820, Captain Nathaniel Dick built a cabin near present-day Cahorsville and named it Dick's Ford after himself and his father. In 1830, Samuel McGee settled in Elizabethtown and built a large home on the east side of Main Street. In 1840, John Ladds established a school in Elizabethtown which served as the primary educational center for the town until 1861 when it was closed due to secession by most of the settlers in Perry County over questions about slavery within their county borders. The post office operated from 1819 to 1865; during that time it served as an important center for mail deliveries for much of central Kentucky. Many famous people were born or grew up here including James Baldwin (1889-1963), author Harper Lee (1912-1968), basketball coach Rick Majerus (1958-present) and Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-CA). In 1965, Pope John XXIII declared October 3rd "John Lennon Day" in honor of Liverpool’s Beatles frontman who had spent some time living in nearby Whitley Bay while he pursued his theological studies at Trinity College Dublin. On that day also, descendants of early residents gathered at Main Street Square for a public unveiling of historic artifacts from previous days' activities there: pioneer Daniel Boone's log cabin still stood vacant; local historian Willis Weems posed for photos with Revolutionary War cannonballs found near downtown;auto parts store owner Roy Smith donated 25 carsoling machines to be used by local choir director Miss Carolyn “Cathy” Stowe during her annual Christmas service; ice cream social worker Mrs./Mrs.(Linda) Beeson brought more than 120 pounds (54 kilograms) worth of concessions to market place on Tuesday evening before retiring to her home later that night; various community organizations contributed items such as expanded parking lot facilities and new sidewalks throughout town center - all part of an effort spearheaded by Vice President Dan Quayle Jr., mayor Don Freeman and other civic leaders to make "Elizabethstown come alive" preceding Lennon's visit two years earlier on October 26th 1985 according to then Mayor Don Freeman Today many businesses have moved away from downtown because there is little business activity taking place there anymore due to lack of customers or competition from satellite stores which are open 24/7 around this area
