They named their new settlement after Princess Elizabeth of England who had been visiting America on her way to fight against France. One brother, John McConnell, also built a gristmill and store in Elizabethtown. In 1814, the town was renamed for General James Halleck during his military campaign against the British in Canada. The first school in Elizabethtown was built in 1819 by Drury and Mrs. Brownell. A second school followed in 1827 by Jno Caldwell and . In 1830, Revd Wm Stephenson opened a Methodist church which served as the town's first post office from 1830 to 1840. The first school board was organized in 1834 with David Ladd as its first president and Wm Stephenson as its second president In 1850s two churches were established: one Congregational and one Baptist/ Methodist both serving local residents until 1865 when they merged into one church known today as First Presbyterian Church of Elizabethtown Incorporated which remains the primary religious affiliation for most people living within the community today
