Many of these pioneers also founded businesses or served as key members of local political subdivisions that remain important today: Sullivan County Agricultural Society (now known as the Kentucky Cooperatives), Elizabethtown Mechanics Institute (now called Gentry Academy), and Elizabethtown Independent School District No. 1 (now defunct). After Revolutionary War veterans returned home from captivity abroad following the Treaty of Paris, many individuals decided to settle here instead of returning eastward to their old homesick familiesfolk—a trend that continued through most of 19th century America. This period saw an explosion in canal construction across central Kentucky due to increased demand along newly growing railroads; during this time, many residents bought spacious lots along canalside waterways for future development reasons only to see those blocks developed into towering skyscrapers only 50 years later when containerized shipping made similar waterfronts much more practical for residential use! Elizabethtown grew rapidly during its early days: by 1800 it had a few hundred residents living chiefly on farms west and north of Main Street; by 1810 it had become one OF THE LARGEST towns IN KENTUCKY! By 1830 there were over 3200 people living HERE! There were two plantations located within steps OF each other just south Of downtown—one operated by Simon Nicholas’ widow Martha & her son John & her son-in-law David Keyes ran “The Old Plantation” while another Elijah Hunt plantation occupied space now occupied by First Presbyterian Church (& yes THAT church still meets inside!) With so much growth happening right next door it becomes easy not too forget why everyone got so excited about moving here back then didn’t you? Remember all those stories about NEVER having internet service or no water OR no paved road? RIGHT?! WRONG AGAIN!!! We all know how things have changed now don’t we? Mr Holmes would be proud! ;)
