Elizabethtown is a small town located in the Fayette County, Kentucky, area. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. Elizabethtown was founded in 1820 by Captain James Caldwell and his wife who named it for his sister-in-law Elizabeth Canning Caldwell. The first post office was established in 1824. In 1830, Colonel John Todd organized a militia to protect settlers from Native Americans and he named the town after himself. The first school in Elizabethtown opened in 1829 and remained open until 1861 when it closed due to lack of funding. The first Presbyterian church was built inElizabethtown in 1830; however, it burned down three years later. In 1834, a sawmill became operational and began turning logs into lumber which helped support the community during its early days. By 1840, there were six stores, two churches and one school within Elizabethtown limits. In 1840s also came new waves of immigrants from Ireland and Germany who brought their own culture with them as well as their skills related to agriculture that would help fuel this growth over time. Irish Catholic immigrants worked on farms while German Protestants worked at local businesses such as mills or shops becoming entrepreneurs on their own terms rather than sticking to traditional gender roles within their respective families or social structures which limited success story opportunities for many women immigrants during this period outside of prostitution or other forms of work that supported family incomes without blemish). English speakers from surrounding areas brought with them various occupations like mechanics (many working at local breweries) that created an ever growing middle class among these newcomers diversifying even more Elizabethtown's economy beyond just farming and trade although both industries continued to be important elements of society well into the 21st century providing stability for those living there year round despite occasional cycles of economic hard times). Elizabethtown was founded in 1792 by James Bowie and his wife, Ann. It became a town after being designated as such by the General Assembly of Kentucky on November 7, 1802. The town was named for Elizabeth County, Virginia, which was then part of the Transylvania Colony. Bowie had come to Kentucky in 1787 to serve as an advisor to the new state government and it is said that he recommended Elizabethtown as a site for a courthouse because he thought it would be more easily accessible from outside of the county than other areas in the colony. In 1802, Bowie also donated land to build a school and church. The first school building was constructed in 1807 and was located on what is now First Street. The second school building was built in 1812 and housed classrooms, a library, and a store. In 1825, Elizabethtown organized itself into a precinct under the jurisdiction of Bowling Green Parish. By 1830, there were over 100 residents living in Elizabethtown proper and additional settlements were established around it including Rippleville (1824), Plum Creek (1827), Laurel Hill (1829), Westport (1830), Eastport (1832-33), New Caney (1834-35) and Bluegrass Hills (1836). During this time period, Elizabethtown experienced significant growth due to its location within easy reach of major markets such as Louisville and Lexington; furthermore, it became one of the few towns in Kentucky whose citizens could participate fully in local government proceedings. In 1840-41, Bowie formed a company with others businessmen interested in developinga canal through eastern Kentucky called the Western & Eastern Canal Company; however, no progresswas made untilBowie's death in 1850.Following Bowie's death two other entrepreneurs took up his mantle - John Neely Jr., who served as mayor from 1860-64;and Wm Denny who served from 1865-68. Both men were very successful at promoting development within their respective communities but they both died before any real progress could be made on the canal project.. In 1870s another group of entrepreneurs led by George Rogers Clark purchased some land contiguous with present day Elizabethtown along what is now Sixth Street; they began excavating water wells there and soon finished construction on what is now known as Rogers House which served as their headquarters while they developedthe area.. From here they began making earnest effortsto start construction on the canal project but again no result was achieved untilClark's death in 1876ianof his son George Rogers Clark II who continued developmentson behalfofhis father's estate until completionofthecanalin1926.- After much lobbying by various organizationsincludingthe Methodist Episcopal Church et al.,theKentucky Legislature passed An Act Relative To A Digest Of All Laws And resolutions Concerning Our Territory southwest of LouisvilleAnd adjoining parts thereof On July 1st One thousand eight hundred thirty nine [1], providingthat “every person’s white acres shall amount to one half mile square”In addition thereto “as much improvement may be made upon any Estate already laid out or Surveyed for sale therein without payment thereof unto said purchaser or person claiming an interest therein beforesaid date”The act provided for an auction system whereby “any lot sold not sooner than five days after notice having been given thereby shall be void forever”It further provided that all lands newly surveyed for sale must also be surveyed within five years preceding its sale so that purchasers have plenty of timeto make arrangements with surveyors
Elizabethtown was founded in 1792 by General John Forbes. The town was named for Elizabeth, the wife of George Washington. It grew rapidly during the 1800s and became a major port on the Ohio River. In 1801, Elizabethtown was annexed by Louisville, Kentucky.
