Elizabethtown is a town in Fayette County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 7,113 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fayette County. Elizabethtown has been named for Elizabeth, Countess of Derby and Barony of Wales. The first settlement in what is now Elizabethtown was made on the east side of Paintsville River by settlers from Virginia in 1784. Fayette County was organized on December 1, 1802 from portions of Hardin and Perry counties. On November 3, 1803, parts of Harlan and Hazard counties were added to Fayette County. The original name for Elizabethtown was "Newbern". The town site was chosen because it had a high water table and good soils for farming; both factors were important in early days when land prices were very low. After some residents objected to their having to share in the cost of building a public school which opened in 1827 (the town did not have one until after incorporation), they voted to rename the school "Queen's" during its first year of operation as an attempt to build more support for it among local citizens. In 1830, part of Clay county (now Webster) became part of Fayette County; this gave rise to the idea that the main thoroughfare throughElizabethtown should be called "County Road." A bill proposing this name was introduced into Congress but never acted upon because then-President Andrew Jackson vetoed it as he felt that such a designation would historical marker too much attention to what he saw as petty squabbles between different sections or counties within his own territory. In 1837–38 another bill proposing that Queen's Highway be renamed US 82 passed both houses but no action followed because President Martin Van Buren opposed any new state roads being given national appellation without proper congressional approval based on evidence available at that time about how such road construction would benefit only a small number of people at the expense of many others across state lines. Eventually partaking fully within Indiana Territory following Indian Removal made logistics impossible so all federal roads within Indian Territory were given statewide appellation without proper congressional approval which created political problems down deep where former British colonies continued existence independent from Ulysses S Grant’s governance structure despite being officially abolished by him twelve years earlier while most other areas had fully transitioned over since independence under his presidency including Elizabethtown which went unacknowledged until after his deathbed conversion back to Christianity due largely to pressure from anti-immigrant nativist elements inside and outside his own government who wanted nothing less than total control over all Native Americans living southward beyond their reservation boundaries – something they finally achieved with General Sherman’s scorched earth policy toward all reservations nationwide during World War II when vast numbers perished due primarily to disease brought home by American troops engaged therein – thus proving once again just how rapidly popular movements like those associated with evangelical Protestantism can sweep away well intentioned governmental efforts at social engineering if left unchecked even though often cloaked under various expressions like “civil rights” or “social justice” today …………………………………………..
The town of Elizabethtown, Kentucky was founded by families from Virginia in 1784. The town grew rapidly due to its location and natural resources, and by 1815 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In the 1830s, Elizabethtown became a center for cotton production, and during the 1840s and 1850s it experienced rapid growth as a manufacturing town. In 1859, Elizabethtown became the capital of Kentucky after becoming the state's first city. The city continued to grow until it reached its peak in the early 1870s when economic factors collapsed and violence flared between local gangs. In 1881, Elizabethtown was renamed Louisville after General James K. Polk who had served as Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of War at the time. By 1890, however, Louisville had become an important transportation hub with several major railroads leading into central Kentucky. As a result of these changes,Elizabethtown gradually lost its role as an important cultural center until the late nineteenth century when it regained some importance as a bedroom community for cities such as Louisville and Cincinnati.
