Elizabethtown is a small town in eastern Jefferson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. Elizabethtown is located on the Potomac River. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The first permanent European settler in what became Elizabethtown was John Sevier, who arrived in 1786 and built a cabin on the site of present-day Elizabethtown High School. Other early settlers were James Sager and his family from Maryland; Samuel Goodloe from Portsmouth, Rhode Island; and Nicholas Myles from Georgia. The town was founded on November 15, 1819 by Jedediah Smith and other traders as part of a larger region that included Bardstown (now Louisville), Frankfort (now Bowling Green), and Paducah (now Hopkinsville). Smith named the town after his wife's birthplace, Elizabeth Township in England. At its peak during the late 19th century, Elizabethtown had a population of 2,500 people. During World War II, Elizabethtown was one of four U.S. communities to receive Holocaust survivors as residents through Project Exile (later called Humanitarian Affairs Administration – HAA) which transported Jewish refugees to North America under assumed names such as "Harry" or "Joseph." After World War II ended there were no large waves of postwar migration like there were following war years with newly graduated college students coming back into rural towns across the country looking for jobs and opportunity that didn't exist before WWII when all those people left for urban centers like New York City or Chicago jobsites couldn't find anything to do outside their homes so they got these ideas about starting their own towns all over again but this time it wasn't just going to be similar houses with good schools you know but actually something more than that because we wanted them to have some dignity because post-war America had given these people things they never even thought possible like opportunities for education we wanted them not only to have successful lives but also decent lives so we started giving away cars and houses without asking anyone's permission so finally we got somebody who could think about it properly instead of just doing things because somebody told them to do them

Elizabethtown is a small town in Letcher County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. Elizabethtown was founded in 1825 by John Banta and Caroline Houchin. The first post office in Elizabethtown was established in 1829. It changed its name to Letcherville in 1861 after Letcher County was created from parts of Fayette and Butler counties. In 1872, the community had a school with 30 students and an adult teacher; it became a high school in 1935. In 1945, Elizabethtown Middle School merged with nearby Catholic High School to form Elizabethtown Catholic Schools; the merger was dissolved in 1996. The town has three churches: St. Joseph's Episcopal Church, First Baptist Church, and Second Presbyterian Church. The town has been home to many famous people throughout its history including author Jules Verne (1847-1912), journalist Pte James Allsup (1892-1973), basketball coach Rick Majerus (1953-1982), golfer Phil Mickelson (1978-2009), musician Joe Bonamassa (bio) and singer/songwriter Sheryl Crow
The community of Elizabethtown was founded in 1792 by the married couple, John and Susanna White. The town was named for Queen Elizabeth II of England who had visited the area during her reign. The white settlers were subsistence farmers and began to grow crops in 1794. By 1812, the population of Elizabethtown had reached 100 people and a school was built. A store opened in 1816 and a post office was established in 1818. In 1840, the steamboat Kentucky (14) anchored at Elizabethtown wharf to load passengers for Louisville. At that time, Elizabethtown had a population of 350 people. A new courthouse was built in 1853 and a fire destroyed it in 1861. In 1865, Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived at Elizabethtown for his campaign against Confederate General Robert Eicklenberg. He stayed with the White family until his death six weeks later at home from an attack by mosquitoes while on tour of eastern Kentucky
