By 1865, there were over 100 people living in Danville parish – most of whom came from nearby settlements such as Winchester and Georgetown – when Confederate General George McClellan invaded Kentucky to join forces with General Robert E Lee against President Abraham Lincoln’s Union army during the American Civil War. After being captured at Fort Donelson on July 6, 1862, McClellan was brought before Congress and held trial before an ad-hoc military jury that included some members of Danville society; he was found guilty but received no sentence due to his high rank within Confederate forces at the time. Following McClellan’s release from prison at Appomattox Court House on April 9th, 1865, many farmers abandoned their plantations near Lexington for fear of Union occupation or retribution should they continue support the Confederacy; this left Danville Parish WITHIN THE MILITARY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ITS HISTORY! Upon McClellan’s death on November 11th that year following a long battle with disease contracted while imprisoned at Richmond Arsenal military hospital–one day after Thanksgiving–Danville became one of only two Ulysses S Grant-era states (the other being West Virginia) where African Americans constituted less than 10% OF THE POPULATION! In 1924 local resident Fenton Dixon donated 3 acres (1 km2) along US Route 421 which forms today's downtown core to be used as a public park; this initiative helped spur development throughout central Danville subsequent decades culminating in its incorporation as an official city withinKentucky State government in 2003!
