Danville is a small town in Jefferson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 5,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville-Jefferson County metropolitan area. In 2000, Danville was one of the fastest-growing communities in Kentucky. The downtown core has been renovated multiple times in recent years and now features a mix of retail and office spaces as well as an art museum. The first inhabitants of what is now Danville were Native Americans who hunted game along the Spring Fork River. A post office called Danville was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1845, John Hargrave built a cabin on land donated by his father-in-law Wm. Bicknell. Hargrave became proprietor of what would become known as Danville Township on July 1, 1850; he served as its first treasurer and justice of peace from 1851 to 1861. He also founded the first school in Danville Township: a one-room log building that served as both schoolhouse and community center for about fifty years before being replaced by a larger structure in 1865. In 1859, Daniel Kapp bought some land southwest of present day Danville from James Salyer for $1 cash plus $2 per acre (what would eventually be worth over $100 million today). Kapp began developing this land into what is now known as "The Highlands". He named his development after himself – "Kapp's Highlands" – and began construction on what would become one of Kentucky's most famous tourist attractions: The Highlands Golf Course which opened to play golf starting April 10, 1870 (the course still remains open). By 1880, Kapp had developed much of "The Highlands", including the present day village that bears his name; he also constructed several churches within the Village limits; these structures are still standing today and are used for religious services today rather than hosting events such as golf tournaments like those that took place during Kapp's time period. He also created many other business ventures throughout his career including cattle driveings through parts of central Kentucky which continue to this day; some have even gone so far as to claim that he may have invented modern trucking!
