As the birthplace of the modern optical equipment industry, Danville has long been a center of excellence for technology and optics. In 1879, Amos Stowell settled in Danville with his family and began to make lenses and other optical equipment. He is credited with being the first to produce a true zoetrope, which allowed photosynthesis to be recorded on glass plates. The town quickly became known for its production of optical products, and even today it is home to some of the world's most renowned manufacturers of advanced optic devices. In 1951, American Optical Corporation was founded in Danville by two entrepreneurs, Milton Siegel and Jay Neece. American Optical was one of the first companies to develop digital image processing technologies used in photography and video editing. The company also developed fiber optic cable (the first commercially available fiber-optic cable), which helped to expand commercial television services throughout America. In 2000, American Optical was merged into Intel Corporation. Danville, Kentucky is a small town in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Campbell County and home to the Danville Municipal Airport. The first settlers in what is now Danville arrived in 1827, when John Sevier and his family founded a trading post on the riverbank near present-day Danville. By 1840, the community had grown enough that it petitioned for incorporation as a village, but only received approval in 1865 after lengthy debate. In 1871, Danville became an incorporated town; its citizens voted to name it after Daniel Boone because he had been an early settler thereabouts and also played an important role in promoting growth within the community. During World War II, Danville served as a major industrial center for surrounding Campbell County due to its proximity to strategic munitions plants and other wartime production concerns. However, since then much of its manufacturing output has shifted away from industry towards services such as retail trade and wholesale agriculture. Today,Danville is known primarily for its agricultural products – such as cornmeal and flour – although some businesses do still operate in downtown areas such as Main Street (which contains several antique stores) or Herron Avenue (a commercial strip that runs along one side of Interstate 65). Additionally, many local residents continue their civic involvement through organizations like Scouts Weekly/Rifle & Scout Camps Inc., which offers overnight programs for children ages 6-12; Boys Brigade; Area 505 Rotary Club; United Methodist Church; and Chamber of commerce chambers of commerce promotion committee
