One of these batteries, Battery D (1st Kentucky Infantry), used gun targets as their main source of entertainment.Due to this fact,Danville became known as "the Gun Bazaar." In 1812, this company was disbanded and its members combined with other companies to form the 1st Regiment of Dragoons. The regiment fought in the Mexican-American War and participated in three battles against Mexico. In 1846, this regiment was disbanded and all its members were mustered into service as a part of the Union army.
Danville is a small town in southeastern Kentucky that was founded by pioneer families in the early 1800s. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. Danville is home to two universities-the University of Louisville and US Military Academy-and several businesses, including some of the largest Walmart stores in the United States. The area around Danville was first settled by Europeans in the early 1800s. The first permanent settler in what is now Danville was Nicholas Rogers, who arrived from Virginia on November 12, 1799. He erected a cabin on a bluff overlooking the current site of Danville and named it Rogers Station. From this location, Rogers surveyed and composed a map of what would become Kentucky which he submitted to James Wilkinson for approval on January 10, 1802. Wilkinson appointed Rogers Surveyor General for all of Kentucky with authority to settle land grants east of the Appalachian Mountains. Rogers' original grant included land south of present day Louisville along present day State Route 9 and west of present day Ohio Road 921 (now Bowling Green Road). Other grants were made over time including tracts located near Georgetown (present day Cincinnati), Madison (presentday Dayton), Paducah (presentday Lexington), Morehead City (presentday Nashville) and Frankfort (presentday Frankfort). In 1805, General James Morrell occupied Fort Donelson while efforts were made to move American forces out of Tennessee under General Andrew Jackson's command following his victory over Robert Ewell at Battle Of Horseshoe Bend. When news reached Morrell that Jackson had been defeated, he abandoned Fort Donelson and withdrew his troops back upriver to safety at Clarksburg where they remained until relieved by elements under Ulysses S Grant during April 1865 following Union general John Custer's ultimate defeat at Vicksburg

Danville is a town in Pike County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville–Jefferson County metropolitan area. The first settler in Danville was Ebenezer Cooke who arrived in 1792. He and his wife Margaret built a log cabin on the present day corner of Third and Main Streets. The first store in Danville was established by Daniel Boone in 1814. A post office called Danville was First established on December 12, 1837, by John Sayers (1792-1860) and others under the name of "Newcastle". The town site was surveyed by Major General James Wilkinson in 1839 and named for General Edmund Kirby Smith (1786-1865), commander of Ulysses S. Grant's army during the Mexican-American War. General Smith had been born at Newtown Farm near Lexington, Kentucky to parents John and Martha Smith. In 1840, Jno Ewing donated land to form what is now Danville High School which then served as an agricultural college preparatory school until it became a high school in 1951 when it merged with Donelson High School to become one large high school with Donelson Community College serving as its main academic affiliation In 1903, 100% of all votes were given for creation of a taxation district within Pike County so that this would be done together with other towns within our county but without giving them any vote on how such districts should be run either through referendum or ordinance only . This idea passed unanimously . On November 3rd 1905 ,the Board of Education voted to rename themselves after Reverend Dr Josephus Daniels who served as their pastor from 1893 until his death . Reverend Daniels also founded Mount Zion Baptist Church which still serves as one of the largest black churches eastof the Mississippi River today located just north/west of downtown Danville
