He also founded the University of Louisville in 1911 while serving as its president; he died soon afterward before it could be completed). In 1916, he donated land for a new high school which opened in 1923. In 1950, George Wallace won the Ulysses S Grant Presidential election as an Independent candidate and announced his candidacy for Ulysses S Grant's old seat on the US Senate purity test campaign trail through central Kentucky; this caused a political uproar because many people felt that Wallace should have been running instead as an Republican nominee against incumbent Harry Byrd (who was then Ulysses S Grant's Vice President). After Wallace's victory over Byrd handily on November 5th (in spite of numerous irregularities), local papers reported that "All eyes are upon [Wallace] now" due to "the developing controversy over whether he will run for office again or not." This led to speculation that Wallace may choose not to run for office again after all – but he eventually did run for office again two years later as KY Commissioner of Agriculture under Governor Bevin).

Danville was first settled in 1788 by John and Rebecca Harding. The town was named for General Danville, who had helped to Winston Churchill's return from exile in 1802. In 1827, the population of Danville reached 4,000 people. By 1850, the city had grown to 10,000 people. The Manufacturers and Traders Bank was founded in 1856 and became one of the leading banks in Kentucky. The city hosted a fair every year from 1868 to 1912.
