Covington is a town in and the county seat of Jefferson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 21,823 as of the 2010 census. Covington is one of the oldest towns in Kentucky and has been inhabited since 1785. The first permanent settler was James Caldwell, who arrived in 1786 and laid out a plat on which he named today's Covington. The town was founded by John Covington, an Englishman who came to America in 1768. He built a log cabin near present-day Oldham Road and laid out three small streets that still run through the town: Cumberland Avenue (now US 66), Third Street (now First Avenue), and High Street (now Main). In 1791 Covington erected a courthouse on what is now Fourth Street. In 1801 John Fenton moved to Covington from Alexandria, Virginia; he had come over with his family on the "Albany" ship. A year later planters from Randolph County began settling around him; within two years Randolph County had a population of 10,000 people. By 1810 there were 20 settlements in Jefferson County - 12 of them located east of Louisville - and 100 businesses operating. In 1812 Colonel Thomas Harnett organized the militia for service against Tecumseh's Indian Wars; when hostilities ended Harnett returned home to Indiana but continued to support Kentucky militias until his death in 1826 at age 81. In 1830 Colored people started coming to live in Covington; by 1840 they constituted about one-fifth of the total population. At its peak manufacturing activity occurred during World War II when Mfgrs Trust Company completed construction of several plants within the city limits including an airplane engine plant (#2) on West Broadway just north of downtown that employed 1,500 workers during World War II alone; other industries that developed here during this time include papermaking (especially carpeting), trucking services, printing/publishing/photography/electronics/machinery production etc.; however most residents have passed away since 2000s due to various reasons such as advanced age or relocation elsewhere

Covington, Kentucky is a small town in southern Kentucky that was founded by Welsh immigrants in the early 1800s. The town has been home to many famous people throughout its history, including Clayborne Carson, who served as U.S. Ambassador to China and then as Secretary of State under Franklin D. Roosevelt. Covington also played a role in the Civil War with its military units being called the 1st Regiment of Kentucky Volunteer Infantry and 2nd Regiment of Kentucky Volunteer Infantry.
The Covington area has been inhabited by the Kanes since the late Stone Age. The first settler in this area was Patrick Kane, who arrived in 1779. A post office called Covington was established in 1825, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first store in this area opened in 1881. In 1902, a community hall and gym were built on land donated by John Fenton. The first residents of Covington were African American. In 1916, a water system was installed and named after General John J. Pershing. The population of Covington grew rapidly during World War II due to the production of munitions at nearby Munitions Plant No. 4. Nevertheless, during the war period there were few economic opportunities for Covington residents because most jobs were located elsewhere within Kentucky or outside of America. By 1951, however, there had become a small but active community that contained an elementary school, two churches (one Methodist, one Baptist), a black market grocery store/cafeteria/laundromat, two schools (grades PK-12), three businesses (two successful cotton gin operations and one unsuccessful jewelry manufacturer), four homes (three with attached garages), and seven rental properties).
