Covington is a town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Hardin County government. Covington became a town in 1868 and was named after Commodore David Covington, an American Revolutionary War officer and signer of the Declaration of Independence. The first post office in Covington was established on July 10, 1868, by Wm. Hinton. The first settlers in what is now Covington were wagon train merchants who traveled through the area during the early 1800s looking for new land to settle. In 1827 John Fenton organized a wagon train from Louisiana to Cincinnati with twenty men and they reached settlements near present-day Louisville and Nashville before being forced back by Native Americans. In 1828 Major General James Wilkinson founded Fort Harrison on the north bank of the Cumberland River opposite Cincinnati as part of his efforts to secure Indian Territory for Ulysses S Grant’s Creek Nation tribal chief Robert Ewing. When Wilkinson left Kentucky for Illinois in 1830 he designated George Rogers Clark as commander of all military operations west of the Ohio River under general order No 910/1830 which ordered Clark to march into Indian Territory “to expel all such savages from that portion thereof which may be determined by him to be Properlytilee governed by white men” Clark pushed forward through what are now Johnson County and western Seward County towards present-day Lexington but encountered more resistance from local militia led by Colonel John Donelson than he had anticipated and returned home without reaching Lexington before being forced back again eastward alongpresent-day Floyd Road past Clarksville before finally arriving at Fort Harrison on October 15, 1830 just four days after Wilkinson had departed for Illinois permanently denied any chance at success Donelson's forces eventually forced Clark back across Floyd Road into Indian Territory where he winterized at Poplar Hills outside present day Lebanon Junction before returning home via similar routes in December 1830 having failed twice at achieving his stated goal Following these events various groups seeking land east ofthe Ohio River formed around this time including one led by Captain James Mooney composed largely of French Huguenots who set out from Vincennes Indiana with three hundred wagons crossing overland from Canada via Lake Erie on November 14, 1832 en route to remove mass amounts (> 4000) chestnuts that were growing wild alongthe Ohio River between Toronto and Cleveland – an event later known as Mooney's Rebellion or The Great Lakes Colonization Expedition With development occurring rapidly adjacent to both Cincinnati proper (on its eastern edge within today's Jefferson County) andFort Harrison ascendancy began among early entrepreneurs thanks largely to advantages granted them due primarilyto their location – ideal sites comprising strategic miles wide open landscape completely lacking forest or other natural barriers offering ample spacefor settlement situated atop high ground making it easy enough for pioneers access transportationresourcesand waterpower requisite for subsistence agriculture village growth initially ensued with non-native residents freely mixingwith original pioneer settlers but eventually privilege developed becoming increasingly exclusive leading ultimately unto majority EuropeanAmerican control over much of central Kentucky during mid nineteenth century

The town re-emerged as a small farming community after the war, and it remained an agricultural center until the early 21st century. In 1906, Covington became the site of a pivotal battle between Union and Confederate forces that helped decide the course of the American Civil War. The battle occurred near present-day Cincinnati and lasted two days. During the battle, Union forces attacked Confederate positions while Confederate troops defended themselves with artilleryfire and machineguns. Aftermath of this battle led to increased Union interest in developing nearby Cincinnati as a major cotton market, which eventually led to its incorporation into incorporates United States in 1913 under federal law known as The National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA). Today, Covington is an important center for government technology offices and education institutions in southern Ohio Valley region; it is also home to several popular tourist attractions including: The University of Southern Kynect (USK), Pope John Paul II Catholic Seminary & University Center (PJMCCU), Old Courthouse Museum & Park (OEMP), and Whitesburg National Battlefield Memorial Site (WHNs).
